Tuesday Takeover Spotlight: A.J. Downey

A.J. Downey is a born and raised Seattle, WA Native. She finds inspiration from her surroundings, through the people she meets and likely as a byproduct of way too much caffeine. She has lived many places and done many things, though mostly through her own imagination.

Can you share a little of your current work with us?

“Just rest, hang onto me. I won’t let you fall.”

“Why are you being so nice to me?” her muffled voice asked.

“It’s about time someone was, isn’t it?”

She shivered, but it was warm enough in here, so without looking to confirm I could only guess she was crying. As far as detoxing junkies went, she was being incredibly brave right now. She wasn’t begging for a fix, she wasn’t whining about how much it hurt, she just simply rested against me, let me hold her up, and cried. It was probably the most heart breaking, and at the same time, most inspiring thing I’d seen.

I checked my watch and absently massaged the goo into her hair, grimacing as I felt some of the damned bugs in her hair run over my fingers and hands, trying to get away from the shit that was killing them. Made me wish there had been more of the bastards to kill back in that house. Fuck.

“Okay, Beautiful.” I tipped her head back and rinsed her hair gently but thoroughly. Letting the water detangle it, cautious not to let it catch or pull.

“Th-thank you,” she stuttered dully and I took my attention from her hair to her face. She stared off into space, shivering in withdrawal and I think I swore to myself then and there, that no more harm would befall her. Not while I was around. She’d had her lifetime of pain bundled into just a couple of years and every one of my protective instincts screamed that enough was enough.

Faith needed a friend, and while I’d only ever pulled the white knight routine once, for my brother, she made me want to protect her with everything I was worth. I just wasn’t quite sure how to protect someone when the only monsters that were left to fight were the memories inside her head. I couldn’t even begin to fathom what’d happened to this girl.

Could. Not. Even…

Who designs your covers?

I have two really fantastic cover artists. For the SHMC series, Clarissa Yeo over at Yocla Designs (www.yocladesigns.com) handled all of those, while the upcoming books in both the Moon Forged and The Virtues trilogy were done by Gabrielle Prendergast at Cover Your Dreams. (www.coveryourdreams.net)

Do you have any advice for other writers?

Sit your happy ass down and write it already. You can’t do anything unless you have it all down on paper in the first place. After it’s down you can go back and tweak it or what have you, but until you have a complete first draft, you’ve got nothing.

Do you have any writing rituals or certain things you do to aid your writing process?

Not that I can think of, honestly. I just sit down and write it.

Favorite snack and thing to drink while you write?

Food isn’t high on my list of priorities when I write and I’m lucky I remember to drink enough of anything to stay hydrated enough to keep going.

Anything by Carian Cole, Bibi Rizer, Laurell K. Hamilton, Cherise Sinclair, and the Hades Hangmen series by Tillie Cole. I don’t really do books so much as I do authors. Which is funny, because I don’t really do bands, I like individual songs. Sometimes I get a band that I like a lot of their songs, but it doesn’t happen often.

I love writing (obvious since I'm on here, right?) I don't have a specific genre - I just write whatever story manifests itself inside my brain.

Writing is like therapy. There is nothing else that I can lose myself in the way I can a story. It amazes me that words can take you away from reality and leave you in a dazed state once you've finished.

Aside from writing, I love sloths and mythology. I kind of have a thing for vampires, because let's face it, something about the fact that they fight the urge to bite your neck and drain the life from you is rather sexy. I have an irrational fear of the zombie apocalypse. I honestly cannot imagine a more horrifying way to go than by being ripped to shreds by a mass of mumbling, decaying, and oozing corpses with clicking teeth. Ugh! I just shuddered typing it.

Now the boring basics: I'm married with two wonderful children. I grew up in the south listening to a ton of grunge rock. Me and my sister have an obsession with going to concerts and getting front and center. We often fight over who can get the most swag from the band. I have an unhealthy obsession with Russell Brand's mind, and the smell of crayons is the most soothing smell there is.
 

I hope if you read my work that you will enjoy it. After all, writing is the most amazing magic trick of all... it puts the reader in the mind of the writer (kind of creepy if you think about it). It's scary inside my brain, watch out!

I am completely overwhelmed. My core is on fire and I want so much to kiss him, to touch him. I feel sparks of electricity shoot through every fiber in my body and every nerve ending is screaming for release. I want his hands on me, all over me.

“Amare?”

I put my hands on his chest and push him away. He’s too close, making it hard to form a single thought. I take two steps to the side to put some distance between us so I can speak like a human, not a lust induced zombie. “Yes, they towed my car and it’s in their lot. I haven’t really spoken to them about it yet. I kind of fell asleep on them…”

His face clouds over and he says, “You kind of fell asleep on them? What. Does. That. Mean?” He pauses between each word and growls them at me.

“Jonas took me to see Doc Jordan and he gave me something for the pain, but because I hadn’t slept in days it made me sleepy. I think he ended up carrying me to their clubhouse.” I realize how all this must sound. If someone told me that exact same story, I would be thinking the worst.

“Did they touch you, Amare?” he growls at me, his eyes blazing with anger.

“No, no, no! In fact, Jonas put a guard on my door so no one would go near me. Not that they would. I was safe, Sal.” Something crosses his face and he stares at me so intently that I look away and stare at the floor. He moves back into my space and lifts my head up. “Thank you for getting me coffee. Let’s go have breakfast and I’m buying. I think I shall keep you in my sights to make sure nothing else happens to you. I have never met a woman who allows herself to get into so many dangerous situations, in such a short space in time. You, my Amare, are a handful.” He moves away from me and does up his shirt, then grabs his jacket. He opens the door to his room and extends his arm. “Shall we?” he asks, offering me a smile that reveals his dimple. My core clenches again and I have to fight the urge to throw myself at him.
