Blog Tour: Maelstrom by Francis Guenette

About the Book

Title: Maelstrom
Author: Francis Guenette
Genre: Action / Thriller

A shot is fired into the still night air and a young woman dies on Suicide Ridge. A dangerous game has begun. Over the course of one blistering, hot week, winds of change sweep through an isolated valley in small town America.
Sheriff Bert Calder, with the help of Mayor Amos Thatcher, has held the town of Haddon under his thumb for twenty-five years. As things spin out of control, Calder works the angles, ensuring he can make the most of the upheaval that is to come.
Rafael Destino, facing his own mortality, races against time to gain control of the railroad – a lifeline essential to the town’s survival. His goal – to financially destroy Thatcher, the man he believes responsible for the death of his beloved sister. His tool – adopted son Myhetta. But how far down the road of revenge will Rafael push the young man who owes him everything?
Myhetta is poised on the edge of controlling Destino Enterprises, the job he has been groomed for. While money, power and influence are his to command, the past continues to torment him.
In a clash of powerful men, with fathers pitted against sons, no one will be left unscathed. Maelstrom is a page turner that speeds along like a runaway train.

The heat of the past day hung heavily over Suicide Ridge. A rifle shot shattered the still night air. The young woman walking across the gravel pullout took the shot in her back; the bullet smashed through her body, winged out and kissed the air alongside the arm of the man she had been waiting to meet.
The dead weight of her crashed into him and Myhetta fell to his knees. He searched the darkness in the direction of the shot. Blood pumped from the exit wound in the woman’s chest. The headlights of her car, parked against the battered barrier near the drop-off to the river below, blinded him as the sound of gravel crunching underfoot came closer. Polished, brown boots appeared. A rifle casually smacked against a leg. The wide brimmed sheriff’s hat obscured the eyes but the moonlight caught the silver line of a scar as a voice drawled, “You move along now, Breed. No need for you to hang around.”
Myhetta rose and whistled as he drew out the knife tucked at his back. Two timber wolves loped out of the trees and flanked him. Lips pulled back to reveal yellow fangs as the animals snarled.
The sheriff raised the rifle at his side and took aim at the wolf to Myhetta’s right. “Get going or one of your precious pets dies.”
Sheriff Bert Calder did not make idle threats. As Myhetta backed up a step, hate smouldered in his dark eyes. He kept the animals close to his side with a gesture of his hand as he walked away into the trees. His horse was grazing on the scrubgrass that grew under the tall pines. Swinging his body into the saddle, he urged Black along the trail. He wound his way up the switchback and stopped at a point where he could look down to the dirt pullout on the corner of the stretch of road known as Suicide Ridge. His tall form was outlined in the light of the full moon.
The sheriff returned from the police cruiser parked in the nearby trees with a jerry can in his hand. He had already loaded the body into the driver’s side of the car. He doused the vehicle with gasoline. Reaching inside, he shoved the battered Volkswagen into gear and rolled it forward. He stepped back, lit a match, flicked it into the car and raised his boot to nudge the bumper. The car clunked down the rough, rock face of the ridge. All was dark for a moment then a whoosh of fire lit the night sky.

Blog Tour: The Samsaric by G.W. Lwin

Genre: Fantasy Horror

The plague of 1918 A.D:
The mortal world is in a state of devastation.
A woman wakes up in an abandoned temple of Kali, the goddess of darkness, in an ancient city of Gaya.
She does not know where she is.
She does not remember the events leading to this.
She only hears a familiar voice of a tormented man who has haunted her dreams.
He tells her a story – of a time of souls and suffering, of immortality and gods, of life and death.

This, he says, is Mesopotamia.

THE SAMSARIC is a fantasy-horror novel based on ancient vampirism, history and mythology. Set in an era widely considered to be the cradle of civilization, it is a story of once-powerful mortal races and ancient gods and goddesses to excite and inspire.

Author Bio

I love anything that comprises the old and the ancient full of rich history and spirituality. For me, reading and learning from our ancient past is truly a beautiful, unique and intriguing journey.
From a young age, I have felt that there were two versions of me: the old spiritual one and a young soul who still lives in his fantasy world.
However, both of these versions share one commonality - my interest in vampires from the ancient mythology and beliefs. I was mesmerised by their folklore since young.
The need to express is very strong within me. Writing, for me, provides this gateway and helps me to grow as a person. It is a life-long learning path that I gladly embark.
As a writer, I would like to improve each and every stage of writing, to possess the art of crafting words to communicate the emotions that arise from within to the readers ... a vision shared by many authors.

…

“Who … who … Demon … you … God?” His Eminence stammered.
“I am no demon,” the ancient voice wheezed from a darkened corner. “I am no god either,” it cackled.
“Please, whoever you are, please understand we are acting under the guidance of Ishtar; none of us partake in this with our own will,” His Eminence whispered.
“Ishtar, did you say? I made Ishtar and just between you and me, she is my finest work and prodigy out of all; you are clearly misdirected abusing her name in this manner. His Eminence? Is that what they call you?” the voice continued.
“We are all going to hell for this,” another priest whimpered.
“Please, whatever you need, we have plenty of food to feast upon and exotic jewels in our temple. Please … do not do this …” His Eminence begged.
“Yes, you are right, you do have a good spread of feast here tonight,” the ancient voice said, as the figure stepped out of the shadows into the light, the face still hidden away underneath the hood.
“You’re a priest like us? Or used to be one?” His Eminence said, observing the dusty robe.
“You ask too many questions,” the ancient one responded. “I only want her,” he said, pointing a long forefinger at Shuri.
“Me? Why are you after me? I do not know you and I did not partake in any of these activities! Why would you want me? Go after the evil ones,” Shuri shouted, terrified by the events.
“Oh, the pure one? Is this what this is all about? Is that what you are after? Please—take her, by all means,” His Eminence said. “Quickly— bring her to our guest,” he ordered the two nearest him.
“You want us to bring her?” the two priests replied, trembling with fear.
“YES! DO IT! Otherwise we will all be dead,” His Eminence snapped. The two ran after Shuri, who had begun to run—where, she did not know, yet still she tried to reach safety. The priests caught her before the altar of Ishtar and dragged her back to the ancient one.
“No, you are not delivering me to him,” Shuri said, struggling in their arms. They passed the group of women, who stared at her with blank, dull eyes.
“Are you all just going to talk or are we going to continue this ritual? I am getting all dried here,” one of the intoxicated women said, grasping the priest nearest to her by his robe. He brushed her aside and pulled Shuri to His Eminence. The old man gave Shuri the barest of glances before pushing her to the ancient one. Shuri fell on her knees at his feet.
“Here, you have what you wanted. Please leave in peace,” said His Eminence, stumbling over his words.

Blog Tour: Code of Honor by J.R. Bryce

Title: Code of Honor
Series: Code #2
Author: J.R. Bryce
Genre: Adult, Contemporary Romance/Former Military
Published: November 30, 2015
Mark Williams is a former Marine who needs a temporary, just for show bodyguard simply to ease his father's mind. He hires Julie Jameson, a beautiful young woman who looks nothing like a bodyguard even though her resume indicates she’s tough as nails. She's the perfect candidate. but he's got a few demands of his own. First on that list: he can take his own damn bullets.

Julie doesn’t like being told she was hired because of her looks, or that she isn't allowed to do her job. She is not just an overpriced escort with a gun, she’s good at what she does. Except as things heat up and it becomes obvious to both of them that the threat is real, Mark treats her more like part of the team despite his obvious desire to protect her. And he never treats her as an escort, despite the fact that she really starts regretting that particular clause in the contract.

Together they face explosions, flying bullets, injuries and judgement, all the while dealing with a safehouse full of her brothers, multiple government agencies trying to work together, old friends and older secrets.

The only thing either of them is sure about is that if they both survive, they aren’t letting go. All they have to do is make sure that happens.

Code of Honor Excerpt © J.R. Bryce 2015

Mark broke into her thoughts with a gentle tap on the top of her hand. She shook off her weird train of thought and turned to him with a question in her eyes. What can I do for you, sir? The fact that her mind formed the question like that didn’t escape her, but instead of freaking her out like it would have a month ago it just made her happy, as if she’d found her true calling.
He smiled cheekily. “Can we trade? I notice you don’t like the crispy parts…” He looked down at his hand and her eyes followed, noticing that he had pulled the less-cooked parts off of his bacon and was offering them to her.
“Yeah, sure, if you like it crunchy.” She grinned. When was the last time her brothers had even come close to noticing something that minute? Josh had sent her a teddy bear for her birthday last year, for fuck’s sake. She’d loved it because at least he’d remembered, but he obviously hadn’t realized she wasn’t twelve anymore when he sent it. Mark was so focused on her that he noticed which parts of her bacon she ate. She’d never turn her back on her brothers if they needed help, but they were way off on their assessment of her boyfriend. “That’d be great.”
“I don’t really care one way or the other,” Mark shrugged, dumping the contents of his hand on top of the bacon she had yet to eat and scooping up the overly-cooked bits she’d picked off. “You seem to, though, and you burned a lot of calories earlier. I can’t have you starving on me, now can I?”
“Are you trying to fatten me up? I don’t really need help in that department, you know.” She flashed him a self-mocking smile. “It’s hard enough to ignore half of my bacon, even if it’s cooked wrong. I’ll have to pay for this in cardio later.”
He leaned in close to her ear and lowered his voice so only she could catch the words. “I promise to help you out with that.”
Julie flushed and then jumped when Cull growled “Break it up, you two. I don’t want to see that shit.”
Rolling her eyes, she scooped up the bits of bacon Mark had just deposited and dropped them in her mouth. “Oh, so now talking is off limits? Double standard, much? Or maybe you don’t know how thin the walls are at your house?” She grabbed her plate and went to stick it in the sink, trying not to notice how her boyfriend was burying his silent laugh in his last bite of scrambled egg so that she could continue heckling without laughing herself. “Dude, I know you and Megan do more than talk.”
“She’s my wife.” Cull sullenly replied. “Not- for all intents and purposes- my little sister. I definitely do not want to see that shit, especially with him.”
“How do you think I feel, man?” Josh glared at Julie although he was obviously talking to Cull. “She actually is my sister.”
Sean claimed his place in the lets-gang-up-on-Julie fest. “Uh, yeah. Did you hear her this morning? I was in the hallway at the wrong time, let me tell you. That was not okay.” He turned his attention away from the other boys and onto her. “And your smart-ass comment was unnecessary, thank you very much.”
“Yeah, well, I guess that depends on perspective, huh Sean?” Julie flashed an evil grin toward her brother as she followed Mark into the living room area. “I get it. You boys are worried about your baby sister. What you don’t know is that I quit being a baby and put on my big-girl panties a long time ago. Did you know I had my first boyfriend at twelve? If you’re trying to protect my virtue, you’re a little late.”

JR Bryce (that's me) has been writing since I could read, with varying levels of success. Some of those early stories were not the bestsellers I hoped for at age six, but I've gotten better over time. Really. I promise.

I live in my office corner with a man-eating Chihuahua draped across my lap, my real live Evil Muse mind-controlling me via electronic communication, and writing like a crazy person while my all-too-precocious spawnlings plot each other’s murders and my husband runs away in a vain attempt to save his sanity. Fortunately, the beautiful Oregon Coast has lots of things to distract him so I can get the words on paper.
