M. Lathan
(The Immortals of Westchester Prep, #1)
Publication date: May 15th 2016
Genres: Paranormal, Young Adult
After years of battling leukemia, seventeen-year-old Sydney Long has made peace with her impending death. She expected pain, she expected tearful goodbyes, but she never expected to be turned into an immortal monster who can, with the slightest touch, control life and death.
Now, flowers are stirring when she walks by, she’s oddly drawn to death and the dying, and she must wear gloves to keep her living parents safe.
While her family toils with this supernatural nightmare and finding a way out of it, Sydney falls for magic and an equally as enticing boy who she can’t seem to stay away from.
But nothing comes without a price. When Sydney is targeted for her illegal magic, she’ll learn a whole new meaning of fighting for her life.

EXCERPT:
Dying hurt as much as I’d thought it would.
My burning lungs begged for relief as air hissed into my nose through a plastic tube. The shallow breaths wheezing out of my mouth somehow tasted like medicine and sweat.
They tasted like my life.
Instead of violins and the somber music that played on movies in moments like this, I was dying to the soundtrack of beeping monitors and the soft shuffling of my parents’ feet. They moved around our suite quietly, like ghosts, as they waited for me to become one and finally lose to leukemia.
I’d spent the last three weeks at an upscale ski resort in Lake Placid, just watching my health fade and my time on Earth dwindle to nothing. The view of the constant snow and the towering mountains in the distance usually distracted me from the pain. I needed that view more than ever tonight. Everything hurt, but in my mind, if I didn’t mention it, if I didn’t break, I would beat cancer in my own way.
We couldn’t afford to stay in this snowy paradise, but my parents didn’t want me to die in a sterile hospital. We’d moved to Lake Placid five months ago to chase another faint glimmer of hope, but the clinical trial had ended like all of the others—with me getting sicker. This time, we weren’t doing anything about it. After five years of giving cancer all we had, my parents had decided that we’d fought too much, cried too much, and hoped too much to do it again.
And that was okay. It had to be.
My final days were passing in a blur of tearful calls from my grandparents, long stares from my mom and dad, and smiles from my strangely exuberant hospice nurse. Sarah, with her endless energy and joy, was easily my favorite person on the planet. She supplied medicine that stopped me from feeling and long stories that kept me thinking, which made me feel alive.
Tonight, she was so busy gabbing about her ballerina days that she’d forgotten a dose of painkillers. I didn’t mention it. As she adjusted my oxygen tube, I stared at her beautiful, pixie-like face and the bright red hair framing it. Her tiny features and permanent smile made her a living fairy to me. My personal Tinkerbelle.
“It’s going to happen tonight, isn’t it?” She didn’t answer me. She draped another blanket over my legs without making eye contact. “They gave me a week to live … a week ago.”
“Sydney, I don’t want you to be concerned about death. Ever. Only focus on life and the living. Remember that, sweet girl.”
What a weird thing to say to an almost-corpse. I didn’t need to remember anything anymore. I laughed at her, and that disturbed my failing lungs. One cough turned into two, and soon Sarah had to hold me as my chest heaved relentlessly. The awful sound summoned my parents to my room.
They crept in with red eyes and rivers flowing down their cheeks, wearing yesterday’s clothes.
Nothing said that I was dying more than my dad being home. No matter where we moved, he worked, thanks to his special talent of finding a job within a day. He’d emigrated from China with his parents as a kid, and his entire family worked like one day off would mean certain death. So that was what he did—he spent his days toiling at dead-end jobs to barely keep us afloat. Except for today.
He squeezed my mom’s hand as they approached my bed. Her long dreads were down and wild tonight, and she looked beautiful despite her swollen face and runny nose. My mom had four piercings in each ear, an effortlessly cool hippy style, and a thick Trinidadian accent. Once, I’d wanted to be just like her, but now, I didn’t know what being like her meant other than crying a lot and receiving bad news.
“Mr. and Mrs. Long,” Sarah said, “I was just about to give Sydney her medicine. She’ll be asleep soon, and you don’t look like you’ve gotten much rest. I can watch her tonight.”
“Sarah,” I whispered, as my chest finally calmed. “Go home. Your shift is over.”
She pressed her warm hand to my cheek. I could’ve sworn, for a moment, I felt completely okay.

Review: Under my Skin by Verity James

Under My Skin
by
Verity James

All Neka has wanted for years was to be out of the shadow of her perfect stepbrother, Josh. She is only two months away from making that dream a reality when suddenly something changes: Josh seems determined to prove that he’s not the bad guy she’s always thought him to be. But will their forbidden love and irresistible attraction be enough to keep them together when Josh's father tries to tear them apart?

PLEASE NOTE: This story was originally included in Brotherly Love, a now unpublished anthology. This is a reprint of that story and does not contain new material.

Very good read. Was well written and a good story. I'm not usually into stepbrother romance but I did enjoy the story and will be checking out more from this author.

Really liked this story. I usually avoid stepbrother romances but now I don't remember why, this was pretty good. This was well written and had a good plot . I really enjoyed it. I had never read anything by this author  and will definitely check out more of their work. . This was definitely worth the read.

Book Excerpts
Excerpt 1
From the other side of the car park, a man and a woman were watching him check the door handles. Kasper tried his best not to look guilty, which just made him look exceptionally guilty. The man whispered something to the woman and pulled a phone from his pocket. Kasper scowled at them, but moved away, crossing the road as casually as he could, cursing the man under his breath. He had no way of proving the car belonged to his dad, and it would take ages to explain to the police. Not that the police would believe him anyway, not after all the trouble he caused them last summer. He stopped to give the man his most furious glare before turning the corner.
And that’s when he saw it.
The man across the car park, moving uncomfortably, as if he’d not long learnt how to walk, or like someone had twisted and pinched his synapses. Even from this distance Kasper could tell he wasn’t blinking. His eyes were stretched wide and glassy, like a lizard’s. They caught the low sun. The woman tugged at his arm, calling his name, but he wouldn’t pay her any attention. He took a lurching step toward Kasper, who decided it was time to run.

Excerpt 2
It felt like a good dream turning sour. Kasper stood in the field at the back of Malt Wood, blinking. Something wasn’t right. The grass was knee-high, and motes of pollen spun in the evening light. Pine and larch edged the meadow along the north side. Their roots and trunks were blue with shade. The low sun cast a long shadow off a distant sycamore, its boughs groaning like cellos as they swung in the breeze, calling sorry warnings.
... And a gloom roamed underneath the larches, drumming on a carpet of dead pine needles.
Thud, thud, thud.
Soft.
Dangerous.
Like a tiger’s purr.
And Kasper knew it wanted him. The darkness wanted him. It always did.

Excerpt 3
“I only caught bits of it,” Loki said, as if holding something delicate in mind, something that might shatter if she looked at it too hard. “Mum and dad were arguing last night when they thought I was asleep. It sounded like they were involved in something. Maybe something dangerous. And they thought it was over, but now your dad’s gone missing and they’re frightened it’s all about to come back. They don’t want it to come back. They want to keep it hidden.”
“Keep what hidden?” Kasper asked, releasing the breath he’d been holding without realising.
“The past,” she said, turning to him. “They’ve got secrets, I’m sure of it... I want to know what they are.”
Kasper hesitated. “I don’t know, Loki. I just want Dad back. I don’t know about any secrets.”
She pressed her head against the glass and a bead of water slid past her cheek. “Well that’s because you don’t know what secrets can do,” she said.
He didn’t know what she meant, but before he could ask, a loud knock came from the front door.

Book Tour: Gideon and the Crimson Samurai by R.L. Baxter

About the Book

Title: Gideon and the Crimson Samurai
Author: R.L. Baxter
Genre: Fantasy / Adventure
Gideon Joust is your average twelve-year-old boy, with all the growing insecurities one would expect, following the mysterious disappearance of his father. On one fateful day, the boy’s world is turned upside down – leading to a chance encounter with a brash child warrior: Kibishi the Crimson Samurai.

Author Bio

Ricky Baxter is the author of Gideon and the Crimson Samurai and a collection of short Novellas such as: Mother Gaia, A Sinless Horizon and The Worst Death. He is an avid blogger and speaker, giving advice and thoughts to fellow creators from all walks of life. Currently he lives in London England where he writes and blogs.

Book Excerpts
Excerpt #1
After short moments, the archer and samurai sit by the stream, looking out over the dull sunset. They remain quiet - Kibishi looking troubled, while Albion smiles evermore.

Kibishi: I still stand by what I said. We will part ways once we reach Valero. I cannot allow Gideon to follow me any further. He'll only end up dead.

Albion: I understand. However do you still stand by the other thing you said? The thing about: “Whoever said you and I were friends?” You didn’t honestly mean that – did you?

Kibishi: No... I didn’t mean that. I just don’t want Gideon to trust in me – that’s all.

Albion: And why would you not want somebody to trust you? Friendship is based on trust after all?

Taking a moment to think about his reply, Kibishi bites his lips together while Albion awaits his answer.

Kibishi: When you trust someone... you expect much from that person. You rely on them and look to them for help. I am not capable of doing any of those things, hence why I am not suitable to be Gideon’s friend. If something ever happened to him, I would never forgive myself.

Albion: Hahaha, you and Gideon are so similar. You both are burdened with this cloud of doubt and self-pity. However, if there is one thing that I would criticize about your friendship, it’s that you both assume Gideon to be weak when he is in fact more capable than anyone here.

With a suspicious expression, Kibishi glares upon Albion for many moments.

Kibishi: What are you trying to say?

Albion: Come now, Crimson samurai. You mean to tell me that the thought did not cross your mind, at least once? Gideon is the son of the famous “Miracle Gunman”. Why are you treating him as a weak comrade? That is not a good sign of a friend. Real friends

Excerpt #2
Gideon leaps off the bed and slowly approaches the bedroom window - peering up at the sky. He takes a deep breath as if preparing for another long day – watching as the townspeople carry on with their daily lives. The variation of people is quite something, compared to his home city of Shen. The boy stares in awe at: farmers, market sellers, and groups of unsupervised youth – to warriors, bounty hunters, adventurers, swordsmen, and mystics. In Shen, such diversity is unheard of, but outside its walls, the world seems to be a free-for-all of characters. Suddenly without warning, Kibishi pokes his head into the room from outside, inches from Gideon’s face - breaking his focus. Gideon falls backward, startled by his appearance.

Gideon: Ahhh... - don’t scare me like that Kibishi! And what are you doing outside?

Kibishi: I slept outside – moron. Besides, you’re always afraid of everything so it didn’t make a difference as to how I greeted you. Anyway let’s get going now. That witch is already complaining that we're taking too long.

Gideon: Huh, you want us to leave now? But it’s only nine o' clock and I just woke up!

The samurai leaps into the room before yawning, casually.

Kibishi: I just woke up too, but I guess we have no choice. Besides, the quicker we finish this task, the sooner we can resume our search for your father. Get up rich boy - we have work to do!

Book Tour: Trace & Vibe/ Sync by Letitia L. Moffitt

About the Books

TRACE

She knows what happens when you die.
Nola Lantry is a tracist: she can sense the particles of energy that are released when the human body expires. It’s a somewhat gruesome ability, but Nola uses it to bring some meaning to her otherwise drab life in upstate New York by assisting the Redfort Police Department on missing person cases. When the richest man in town, Culver Bryant, disappears, Nola finds herself in the middle of a case that is both baffling and increasingly dangerous, the danger appearing in the form of death threats as well as the missing man’s brother, Grayson. Does Grayson Bryant pursue Nola to seduce her or to stop her—and why does Nola feel a connection with him despite her mistrust?

VIBE/SYNC

Barely a week has passed since she solved her last case and Nola Lantri is already involved in several new mysteries—with a couple of people who may be just as unusual as Nola herself.

Part 1: Vibe

Eric Lafferty has returned to Redfort City a little too late for his father’s funeral but just in time to get mixed-up in a mystery that involves Nola Lantri, Grayson Bryant, a dead girl and a missing woman. Eric’s ability to read the vibrational changes in brain waves should be an asset, yet it only seems to make life more difficult for him—and given that he and Nola might be the next victims, things are difficult enough.

Part 2: Sync

Emjay used to steal things—nothing big, just enough to get by—but after a terrible accident changes her life, Emjay has only one thing on her mind: revenge. Suddenly private investigator Nola Lantri appears and questions Emjay about her past—and informs her that the mysterious man she works for has a complicated past of his own. Emjay must figure out the best use of her odd ability to “sync,” a technique intended to help people heal—but one that also can cause a lot of harm.
