Review: Leave it All (St. Luke's #1) by April Kelley

Leave it All
by
April Kelley

Publisher: April Kelley (November 10, 2015)
Publication Date: November 10, 2015
Language: English
Cover Artist: Bronwyn Heeley
Length: 57115 words
Pages: 170
Genre: M/M Paranormal Romance

Lucas just wanted to be a normal human being, but normal is highly over-rated.

Lucas Speck had been just some guy who worked at an office supply store and house-sat for his snowbird parents. He was nobody special. Or that’s what he thought before the headaches start and weird things start to happen to him. When people start chasing him his whole life gets turned upside down.

Bennett Somerset is a dragon shifter, who likes his quiet life in his quiet town. He isn’t looking for complications. He already has a family that defines the words, weird and crazy, to perfection. Good thing they live in a small town where nothing ever happens. That is until he smells the most delicious thing in the world and realizes it’s his mate. His little witch of a mate just made things way more complicated.

Leave it All by April Kelley is in a word HOT. Ladies, it is a fun hot ride full of dragons and other shifters but the boys are not for you. These boys like other boys. Lucas is just a normal guy, or so he thought. Thinking he was just a loser until strange things started happening. Magical things. “You’re a witch, Lucas.” Someone should have told him that sooner rather later in life when vampires want to kidnap him. Life on the run sends him into a town full of shifters of all kinds of animals. That’s where we meet Bennett, a dragon. I want one but he won’t be my next BBF his eyes are for Lucas only.

I want to say something negative but I can’t.  Okay so there is one section that had a conflict of the mates being parted and the rescue seemed to happen way too quickly. I think that could have been drawn out to make the climax of his return even bigger. This is a series that I can get behind. Pun not intended but that was funny. Shifters fighting vamps. A sweet romance. Fun family dynamics that made me laugh and were realistic. Betrayal and new friend ships forged.  Action packed the whole way through and non-stop. Yes, in every way you are thinking right now.

Review: Raindropt by Deena Byrne

Raindropt
by
Deena Byrne

  • Print Length: 244 pages
  • Publication Date: March 5, 2016
  • Sold by: Amazon Digital Services LLC
  • Language: English

Leah Fox is a snooty New Yorker who has yet to know life without heated toilet seats. One day, she’s walking along Fifth Avenue, and some woman seems determined to steal her concrete. Leah confronts the woman, and the stranger turns out to be a witch. She tells Leah she’s “too aggressive for Manhattan” and enacts a spell to teach the privileged socialite a lesson. The next thing Leah knows, she's free-falling through a subway grate that deposits her in the Bosch Rainforest. Once there, she falls in a love with a humble gnome who derails her plans of getting home.

With a title like Raindropt: your typical girl meets gnome… it peaked my interest. This story by Deena Byrne is a reverse of the movie Enchanted. Our New York socialite Leah gets dropped into a fairy story realm that is not your Disney style land. More adult themed, and there are some characters that you have seen in other books that you may have grown up with. Fairies, ogres, gnomes, and a witch in disguise all reside here in this rainforest type realm, along with succubi and some brand new creatures. While Leah has to figure out how to live in her new surroundings, she finds love and few other things about herself she never knew.
To say this story and I were love at first sight would be a lie. In the first few chapters, I felt that the dictionary had been over used as well as the word “lapis-lazuli-blue lake”. I am not the fashionista and had to look up the color. Now, the first time it was used to describe the river was fine but it was used over and over, and I felt it became rather obnoxious. Despite that issue, just like Wicked, this book opened up beautifully and sucked me onto their realm.
Deena did create a magical realm full of color, sounds and smells. Who wouldn’t want to watch reality TV with a succubus, have drinks that are sprinkled with fairy dust and have a pet unicorn. Sounds like a place it would like to visit.

Review: Cockswords & Berries: A tale of kings and maidens by The Royal Scribe

Cockswords & Berries: a tale of kings and maidens
by The Royal Scribe

  • Series: Stained in Rivasor
  • Paperback: 306 pages
  • Publisher: CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform (March 31, 2016)
  • Language: English
  • ISBN-10: 1522783725
  • ISBN-13: 978-1522783725

After a chance encounter and unlikely romantic audience with the King of Rivasor, a nubile young waif of peasant bloodline becomes the first and only bed maiden to make the virile and famously well-endowed monarch climax during bedplay. Many admire her talent. Others envy her stain. Some fear her power over the throne. She must be wary no one discovers her own dark secret in the turmoil that ensues!

stain – v. informally, to ejaculate onto another’s skin; n. the visible mark roused by such contact. See THE ALCHEMY OF STAIN

When a Rivasoran man’s semen makes contact with a woman’s skin (on any part of her body), a unique mark—a stain—appears on her forehead within one to two hours.

Elders in the community know who is mating with whom, for they can recognize, for instance, the stain of the blacksmith’s son (or the blacksmith, himself!) on the seamstress’ daughter.

As for the royal stain, few people know what it looks like, and even fewer have actually seen it carried—for kings are forbidden from spewing their kreem as long as they hold the throne. Therefore, to carry the King’s stain, as bed maiden Reina now does, is cause for much whispering and finger pointing among Rivasor clusterfolk,

NOTE: In Rivasor, to be stained is to carry the stainer’s creative power upon oneself. It is a public declaration of a man’s potency and a woman’s desirability. The stain remains visible for approximately forty-eight hours.

Cockswords and Berries by the Royal Scribe. This book is unique in the way that it was written. The language was fine, I enjoyed the renaissance feel of it, but the way it comes together was not as strong as I would have liked. First, the book opens with the plot, cast of players, the prologue and then a welcome by the scribe. I felt as if I were getting ready more for a Shakespearean play and not settling in for a good read. Next was a dictionary of words. This makes me feel as if the writer did not think the readers would be clever enough to understand what was being said. Nine pages of dictionary terms I felt was unneeded. His writing should help carry along if the words were to foreign to the reader but I think we can all get the jest of a man’s cocksword and a woman’s berry without the dictionary.

Now, the tale of the young maiden becoming the king’s bed maiden was hot and an enjoyable story. I liked the fable itself and all that the maiden had gone through all for the love of her king. Unfortunately, the story would switch between first and third person, which for me pulls me out the story. I was never sure exactly if it was the royal scribe in first or that of the maiden.  A few times there were sections that I though was a conversation between two people but I was not sure. Each paragraph would be in quotes but who was saying it I am not sure. The other thing that bugged me was that the King had no name. Everyone else had a name, why not him? He was simply, the King, who also never spoke a word in the entire story. Were we not to get attached to him and only see him as a sex object? Which the boy has some moves, ladies. Read those parts out loud to your mate and see if things get spicier in the bedroom for you.  There is a sweet and sexy story in there, it was just hard to follow at times.

Book Excerpt

The mapmaker’s shop was easy to find, and the door was open, but it appeared empty when she wandered inside.  In an adjoining room sat a Pixie Elf, absorbed in his work as he drew on a piece of paper with a ruler.
Alex knocked on the wall.  “Pardon me, Master Elf, are you the mapmaker?”
He grimaced, clearly irritated by the interruption.  “What do you want?”
“I’m looking for a map of Cardoon.”
“I don’t have any maps of Cardoon.  I make maps for seagoing captains with large ships.  Now get out.”  He angrily waved his hand at her.
“Oh, sorry.  All right, I’m leaving.”  She turned and glanced at his table.  “Is this a map of Eledon?”
“It’s none of your business.  Get out!”  He pointed to the door.
Alex glared at the angry little Elf who could attack her knees at any second.  “If you don’t want any visitors, you should lock your door.”  She stormed away, but just as she reached the front door, two large male Elves stepped in.  Assessing them as goons, she stopped quickly, but was still miffed.
“He just told me to get out.  He doesn’t want any visitors.  Hmpf!”  She folded her arms across her chest.
The mapmaker ran up from behind with his hands in the air.  “My apologies, Lord Sawgrass.  This young Elf rudely interrupted me as I was working on your map.  She was just leaving.”  He laughed nervously and pushed her legs from behind.
The two goons stepped aside as a tall blond male Elf stepped forward.  Alex felt her jaw drop as she realized this was Sawgrass.  She stared at the handsome Elf and blushed.
He stared back at her with bright blue eyes and held eye contact with her for several long seconds.
Then, she blinked and collected herself.  “Yes, and I won’t be back even if I should become captain of a ship.”  She glared down at the mapmaker.
“What do you want a map for?”  Sawgrass smiled warmly.  He resumed eye contact with her and stepped closer.
“This is my first time here, and I can’t figure out where I am.  I thought a map of Cardoon would keep me from getting lost.  I guess I’ll have to draw one myself.”
“Have you ever done this before?”
“I have…in Riverton.  I kept it in my pocket.”  Alex felt mesmerized by his continuous stare.
“Riverton?  You were on Seaward Isle?”  He stepped closer to her.
“Yes, I’d better leave and get some paper in the market.”  Alex felt her face flush.
“Here, take some paper.”  The mapmaker handed her several sheets and pushed her.  “Now get out—I have important business to attend to.  Lord Sawgrass, once again, my deepest apologies.”  He bowed to him.
Excerpt 5:  (331 words)
From the bottom of the hill, Alex gazed up at the huge white mansion.  “This is a very large house.”
“Lord Governor Sawgrass is very wealthy.”  The Elf pulled her along.
“What’s your name?”
“We’re here.”  He opened the gate and let Alex in, still holding her hand firmly.  Another entrance was opened by another male Elf who stood guard.  He saluted and bowed to Alex as she entered where another male Elf saluted.  More goons—how many were there?
She was led into a room where five beautiful Elven women stood waiting.  They were all tall and blond with pointed ears, wearing long dresses made of silk in blue, green, pink, yellow, and white, fitting tightly to the body and revealing a lot of skin.
The one in white stepped forward.  “Lord Governor Sawgrass has asked us to help you prepare for supper with him.  My name is Whitelily.  He said you were tall, but I didn’t expect you to be this tall.  I understand your name is Alexin.”  She inspected her from all angles, checking her up and down.  “Come girls; let’s get Alexin ready for him.”  Whitelily led her down the hall.
“What are you going to do?” Alex glanced at her nervously.
“We’ll start with a bath.  Then, we’ll fix your hair and get you dressed.  We have several lovely dresses for you to pick from.”  Whitelily took her to the next room.
“That’s not really necessary.”  Alex held up her hands to resist.
“A little pampering is necessary.  Sawgrass insists.”  Whitelily waved her hands at the girls.  “Let’s get you undressed.”  She took off Alex’s cape while another unbuttoned her skirt.
Alex considered her situation as the girls undressed her.  She could kill them all and leave, but she wanted to meet Sawgrass again.  How else was she going to find out where Lameer was?  She decided to let it happen.
