Blog Tour: KAT: The Women of Southside Skulls Motorcycle Club by Jessie Cooke (MC Romance)

Title: KAT: The Women Of...
Series: Southside Skulls Motorcycle Club
Author: Jessie Cooke
Genre: MC Romance
Published: November 3, 2017

“Hurricane” Katrina Brown left the Southside for a new life in California when her boyfriend thought she’d killed someone.

Now she’s returning after someone died in California and someone else is dying back home.
Faced with the demons of the past, her desires for Dax, and her anger towards Dax’s wife Angel, Kat is a wild one with a world of trouble just waiting to unravel again.
That trouble is only set to get worse when Dax makes her an offer she can’t refuse.
This is the 6th book in the Southside Skulls MC Series. It is a Standalone Romance Novel but characters from the previous novels, DAX, CODY, GUNNER, ZACK & LEVI are included in this story too.
HEA and No cliffhanger.
Intended for Mature Readers
Chapter 1...
Kat sat in the office while Dax looked over the estimate that she had brought him. She was spoiling for the fight she expected to come, so when he chuckled, she straightened her spine and said:

“I’m sorry, what’s so funny?”
He looked up at her with those gorgeous blue eyes. Damn, every time she saw him lately she needed a fresh pair of panties. When they were younger all Kat could think about was getting the hell out of the Southside and making a real life for herself that had nothing to do with crappy bars or motorcycle clubs. There was a brief, fleeting moment when she might have had a chance with Dax. Hindsight made her wish she had taken it. Who would have thought he’d end up with Angel Brady? She almost rolled her eyes at the thought. He interrupted it by saying, “A new, industrial-sized convection oven? We shot your oven?”

She narrowed her big almond-shaped eyes. Dax’s men had been involved in a shoot-out with a local street gang in the bar her father owned. Dax promised her that he’d not only pay for damages, but renovations as well. Now, it sounded like he was trying to renege. “No,” she said in a sarcastic tone of voice. “My oven was not shot. But if I heard you right, when you came by the other day to beg my forgiveness, you said you would not only replace what was damaged, but also pay for the renovations.”

Still with a smile tugging at his way too sexy lips he said, “I did say that. I’m just surprised that a…an establishment like Brownie’s would have a need for an oven that would make Gordon Ramsey proud.”
She folded her arms across her chest. “You know my situation, Dax, right?”
“Some. I know you gave up your job in Hollywood to come home and take care of Dillon. He didn’t tell me what was going on with him, exactly.”

Kat left for Hollywood when she was twenty-one years old. She wasn’t aspiring to be an actress like a lot of young women that headed out west. Kat went there to become a stuntwoman. Five years later, she was finally getting noticed by some of Hollywood’s biggest directors…and that’s where she made her mistake. She told everyone she’d come home to take care of Dillon and the bar, but the truth was, she came home because there was nowhere else to go.

“He has cirrhosis of the liver. He’s drunk himself to death already; we’re just waiting for his heart to stop now.” Dax gave her a look that said he didn’t believe she was as callous about it as she tried to pretend she was. She ignored it and went on, “In the meantime, he’s let the bar go to shit and he can’t afford to pay his utility bills, much less the medical ones. I gave up a high-paying job to come home, and that’s okay. He’s an asshole and a drunk, but he’s my father, so he’s my asshole and drunk. But that bar is not going to ever support us. When I was in California, my roommate was a chef. He owned a catering service that brought food out to the movie lots. He taught me a lot and before I left, he gave me some of his best recipes.” He didn’t “give” them to her, but it wasn’t like she’d be competing with him 3000 miles away. “I want to start catering. I have Dillon’s van, and it’s something I can do and still run the bar.”

Dax’s lips twitched again. “So what were you planning on doing for equipment before we shot up your bar?”
She narrowed her eyes again. “I was going to empty out my savings account. If you’re going to be this way, I still can.”

He chuckled again. “I’m not being any ‘way,’ Kat. I’m just trying to make sure we reach an agreement here that we can both live with. I agree with the numbers for the inside of the bar and again, I apologize to you for the damage and inconvenience. The kitchen, however…well, that kind of cash is going to have to be run by the executive board. I’m just not sure they’ll agree to it, unless…”

“Unless what?”
“I could put it in front of them as a business proposition.”
She cocked an eyebrow and leaned forward in her chair. “What kind of ‘business’ are you suggesting?”

“What if we were silent partners?”
“Silent as in you give me money and keep your mouth shut about how I run things?”

Dax shook his head at her. He leaned back in his chair and crossed his arms. Kat licked her lips before she realized what she was doing. Damn. It should be fucking illegal to be that hot. How is a red-blooded female supposed to not want to rip off that kutte and t-shirt he’s wearing, climb up into his lap, and rub her naked body up against his rock-hard, tattooed one? He’s sex, dipped in ink with crystal blue eyes and a smile to die for…and fucking Angel Brady ended up with him. How fucking fair is that? “I’ll present it to them as a silent partnership that we keep out of as long as you’re turning a profit and paying us the amount we agree to every month…how does that sound?”

“Like you’re screwing me in the ass with your big dick,” she said. She stood up, knowing she wasn’t in a position to turn down whatever offer he presented, but not willing to let him know that. “We’ll decide if this is going to work once I see those numbers.”
He didn’t try to hide his smile then. It kind of pissed her off that he was so amused by her. “The board meets tomorrow afternoon. How about you make something for us for lunch…something easy, but good, so the guys can see what kind of catering talent you have?”
“Fine…but I’ll need half upfront.”
He cocked an eyebrow. “Half of what?”

“Half of my fee. You don’t think I’m making you shit for free, do you?”

“Katrina, you are a piece of work,” Dax said, but still with a smile on his face. “Go talk to Gunner, tell him how much you need for your supplies and after we get our delivery tomorrow, I’ll pay the catering fees…deal?”
“Sure,” she said. Her body was burning up as she looked at him. It pissed her off that she wanted him so badly. She never wanted a guy she couldn’t have. Kat didn’t have any hang-ups about sex, or her body. That had earned her a reputation on the Southside as a slut before she left home for California. But she didn’t see the difference between her and all the man whores in town, especially the ones in the MC. The double standard pissed her off, and she’d enjoyed the anonymity of living in Hollywood where she could fuck whoever she wanted and it was nobody’s business but her own. She had standards, and she didn’t fuck another woman’s man…most of the time. Dax Marshall would be the one exception she’d be willing to make, if she could get him to realize what he was missing. Maybe once they became business partners…she licked her lips again. Damn, I need to get laid. “What time tomorrow?” she asked him.

“One.”

“How many people?”
“Fifteen.”

“Drinks?”

“Nah, we got that.”

“Dessert?”
“Hmm…something chocolate?”

Yeah, me dipped in hot chocolate sauce, and whipped cream in every orifice. “I could do chocolate.”
“Sounds good then. I’ll see you tomorrow.” Just like that, she was dismissed. She wondered just for a second what he would do if she pulled off her shirt. It was just a fantasy, she’d never do it. Too bad for him though; her tits were real, and they were fabulous. She wondered if Angel Brady could say the same.

She left Dax, picked up her money from Gunner, and fended off a few creepy bikers before getting on her own Harley and heading back to the bar. Kat didn’t grow up in an MC, but she and Dillon moved back to the Southside, where her parents had grown up and the Skulls ran the streets, when she was twelve years old. She knew the first time she saw the Skulls roll by that she wanted to learn how to ride a Harley. She was thirteen the first time she rode one. Unfortunately, it was one that she’d “borrowed” from her friend’s uncle and she dumped it before she even got it out of the lot…but with just that one taste, she was addicted.
When Kat got back to Brownie’s, Dillon was sitting on a stool, talking to their one and only customer. Bill Hardy was an old friend of Dillon’s from high school. They’d played football together. Dillon was something of a legend on the Southside back in those days. He was a running back with 11,232 career rushing yards. It was a record for any high school running back, anywhere. Thirty years later, his record was still holding strong; unfortunately, Dillon wasn’t.
“Hey, Bill,” Kat said as she walked behind the bar.

“Hey there, Hurricane. How goes it?” Kat earned the name Hurricane from her classmates in school when she was just a kid and Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans. It might not have stuck if not for the fact that her personality and her temper were as unpredictable and volatile as a Category 5.
“Hangin’, Bill. What’s new with you?”

“Not a damned thing. You know the wife left me, right?” Kat had only been back home for a month and she’d already heard the story twice.
She nodded. “Yeah, Bill, that sucks.”
“For one of them bikers. Bastards. Cocksuckers. First they take over this town and then just about the time us respectable citizens thought we were going to be able to claim it back, that Marshall kid marries a cop. What the fuck is that?”
Katrina chuckled. She had the same thought herself when she came back and found out who Dax had married. Unfortunately, Kat and Angel had a history before Angel ever met Dax, and that made it even harder for Kat to take. “Yeah, who would’ve thought?” she said. “Hey, Dillon, I need the van tomorrow.”
“For what?”
“What do you care? You using it?” Her dad had gotten his license taken away the last time he’d been picked up on a DUI. It was his fifth, and his final chance with the motor vehicle department. When he called Kat, sobbing over that, she’d told him he was lucky the cops stopped him each time before he killed anyone. He’d told her that she was “cold and uncaring.” That conversation had ended up much the same as most between them did, with a lot of yelling and him hanging up on her.

He narrowed his own almond-shaped eyes at her. Kat looked just like her father. Sometimes when she looked at him she found it strange to see her own eyes staring back at her. “Why you always have to be such a smart-ass?”

She sighed. “I don’t know, Dillon. I don’t have time for analysis tonight, though; I have some cooking to do.”

“What are you cooking?” Bill asked her.
“I have to bake a cake or two.” She smiled proudly and said, “I have my first catering job tomorrow.”

“Catering job? Why would you do that? Who’s going to take care of the bar while you’re out catering?” Dillon asked.
“Seriously?” she said. “You can’t handle it for a few hours at a time without me? I mean, I know Bill here can knock ’em back pretty quickly, but since he’ll probably be our only customer, I think you’ll be okay.”
Dillon’s eyes took on that sad, nostalgic quality they got when he was sliding toward inebriation and he said, “You know, it used to be standing room only back in the day when we first came back here. People dropped in just to look at my memorabilia.” Kat sighed. He was about to go off on a tangent about his lost opportunity. He could have been the greatest running back the NFL had ever seen. One fateful night of poor decisions changed all that when he injured his knee and lost his place in the draft. Kat didn’t believe he ever really got over that. He might have, if that had been the worst that ever happened.

Early on, Dillon masked his pain with an artificial smile because it was all about keeping up appearances. He married his high school sweetheart, the captain of the cheerleading squad, and the cliché couple that would eventually be Kat’s parents moved to New Orleans.
Dillon got a job there, working for Katrina’s mother’s uncle in a bar in the French Quarter. Her mother worked at a popular bed and breakfast on Bourbon Street. Katrina was born in a hospital overlooking the Mississippi River and from the outside looking in, for the first seven years of Katrina’s life, the little family looked perfect.

From the inside, however, Katrina was an innocent, unwilling witness to the destruction that would ultimately tear them apart. Dillon couldn’t adjust from being the local golden boy on the Southside of Massachusetts to being a nobody in the French Quarter…or at least that was what Kat heard her mother say repeatedly. Her mother Cora was beautiful. She had long, dark hair, lavender eyes, and the body that went along with being the captain of the cheer team. Her job as a concierge at the B & B afforded her the opportunity to meet a lot of people…a lot of men…and she liked to flaunt those assets of hers, or so Kat heard Dillon say repeatedly.

There were passionate fights and although Kat was too young to know what was happening then, she eventually figured out that there were also passionate make-up sessions. Kat spent the time that she wasn’t at the gymnastics classes, the ones her mother pushed her to take, hiding in her room so that she didn’t have to listen to them. When they fought and when they made up, she’d turn the sound up on the TV in her room to try to drown them out. Kat was seven years old when they had their last fight. She was in her room as usual watching TV and trying to ignore the ugly things they were saying to each other. That fight seemed to last forever, finally ending with the slamming of the front door.
Kat would be woken up the next morning by the sound of the doorbell…and the detective that walked through the door when Dillon opened it would bring news that would forever change both of their lives.

Jessie Cooke writes hot romance novels about tough guys, bad boys, bikers, fighters and lovers and the women of strong character who tame them.

EXCERPT:
She moved over on the bed, giving me room to get in next to her. I got in. “I’m afraid I’m… God, this is hard to admit.”
Her hand glided down my jaw. “Tell me.”
“I tried—I tried to go out the other day, just for a walk or something. I couldn’t do it. I couldn’t make it past the damned threshold of the door.”
Her face was pure disappointment, and I knew mine mirrored it. Admitting it to her, I felt like a shadow of a man.
“But you tried, right? That has to count. I mean, you go out with me all the time.” Her voice faltered at the end of the sentence.
“I did try. But I couldn’t go through with it.”
She scooted closer to me and put one hand on my face while she buried her own in the hollow of my neck. “Can you just hold me and forget that there’s something we can’t do? I’d like to hang on to the notion that you can do anything—just for the night.”

Author Bio

I was born during a blizzard. I’m told it was pretty cool but I have no memory of that time. I grew up in two tiny towns in Virginia and spent most of my twenties moving around the US. I’ve lived in Virginia, Florida, Missouri, and Washington. I’ve settled down, for now, in Raleigh, North Carolina.

I’m a writer and improviser. I studied acting in college but spent more time rewriting lines than memorizing them. My first play, Fourth Wall, was produced my junior year. Since then, I’ve written several full length plays, one acts and screenplays. I started writing fiction in my late twenties. Now, I focus mainly on novels but still dabble in theater.

Fun facts about me: There are none. I’m sorry to disappoint you so soon. But, I do love to read, write, and run. My hubby is my favorite person on earth. Dogs are my second favorite. All dogs. I love orange juice, especially when it’s mixed with club soda. Carbonation is better than alcohol. Jaws is my favorite movie. Everything I’ve said so far is true.

Book Excerpts

The Models have just returned to school. Their otherworldly beauty is gone and so is their power over their fellow students. Some adjust well, some don’t. Grape does her best to protect her friends, but as you’ll see, it isn’t always easy.

Graeson hovered just outside the cafeteria doors. He smiled when he saw her approaching and gave a quick wave.
"I'm starving. Not literally, but you know what I mean," Grape said, thinking of people who were actually starving. She'd forgotten to pack a lunch that morning or any snacks. Her tummy rumbled as she searched her purse for a few dollars.
"I might be able to spare some of my sandwich. I haven't been super hungry lately," Graeson offered.
"What'd you bring?"
"PB and J."
"That sounds like heaven. I'll take whatever you don't finish, but no worries. I have money in here somewhere. And Bam! Found it." Grape pulled a crumpled five dollar bill out of her bag and held in front of Graeson, savoring the small victory.
"Good. I kind of want all my sandwich."
"Can I have a bite?" she asked, now that her mouth was watering for creamy peanut butter and sweet jelly.
Graeson made to answer, but his words were drowned out by a scream from down the hall.
"What the…" Grape said, peering at the backs of students as they huddled into a mass. They swarmed the middle of the hall, circling around a small space. "What's going on?"
"Looks like a fight." Graeson's body tensed. "We should head into the cafeteria.
"Uh-huh," Grape said, but she kept her gaze locked on the crowd.
"Get him, Reggie!" someone yelled.
A book bag flew into the air from the middle of the pack. Grape recognized the Gucci bag. It might not be too long before the twins' aunt made Xavier sell his expensive accessories as well as their cars, but she hadn't yet.
"Crap, come on," Grape said, jogging toward the crowd. She had to push her way to the front. A hefty kid with huge, hulking shoulders held Xavier in a headlock. He punched the former Model in the face, and Grape saw blood spurt onto the floor.
"Hey!" she screamed, stepping forward, not sure what she could do. She tried to grab the guy's arm to stop him from hitting Xavier again, but the kid swatted her away. She tripped backward and landed hard on her rear, sending a jolt of pain through her body.
Anger raged in her belly as her ribs throbbed. Grape struggled to her feet. The giant kid picked Xavier up and held him in the air as if the former Model weighed no more than a child. "Put him down," she yelled, but her voice was drowned out by the crowd. They cheered to see Xavier body-slammed.
Grape heard a low growl and was surprised to find that it was coming from her. She took a step forward, her fists clenched and ready.
Two kids standing in the front row, red-faced from yelling, were shoved aside as Lonnie plowed through them. He landed two quick punches to the big kid's mid-section. The kid dropped Xavier, who landed heavily on his side.
"Ugh," Xavier moaned as Lonnie reached down to help him to his feet.
"Look out!" Grape yelled as the kid raised a ham-sized fist in the air. But he moved too slowly. Lonnie landed a kick to the giant's crotch before the boy could throw his punch. The boy stood still for a moment, his hand still raised. His face slowly turned red as he folded over, falling hard to the ground. Xavier stood and thrust his boot into the kid's stomach.
"You okay?" Lonnie asked his brother.
Xavier grabbed his book bag from the ground. He used the bottom of his T-shirt to wipe the blood from his nose. "I'm fine," he grunted.
Graeson grabbed Grape's arm and pulled her back into the crowd.
"Where were you?"
"Stuck in the back. We gotta go."
"But Lonnie's..."
Graeson pointed at the teachers rushing toward them. "We gotta go."

EXCERPT:
As we walk down the street next to each other, it strikes me that the nagging feeling I’ve been having lately is also down to him, because I look too much like my father. I’m the same height as him but skinnier. I adjust my walk so I don’t mirror his familiar swagger. I wish I didn’t have his hair, down to the identical whorl slightly to the right at the back of our heads. His hair is darker than mine, so dark auburn it looks black when wet, but thin and limp, always flyaway, so no good for keeping long. Buzz cut material, and that looks fine enough on him. My hair is quite short by convenience only. I would have liked to have my mother’s hair, which is thick and robust, a haystack in the mornings, and she uses a straightening iron to control it. If I tried that iron on my hair, I think it’d just melt away and disappear.
“How does summer feel so far?” Dad says and waves at Mrs. McAtee, who used to babysit him when he was little. I don’t think Dad has fond memories of her, because she never babysat me or Ash. No one outside the family was ever allowed to babysit us. “Any plans?” he adds after I fail to reply in the three seconds it takes him to grow impatient.
“Deliver papers and go busking,” I say. I was supposed to wait tables at Pepito’s Italian, but they went bust two weeks ago. I haven’t found anything else. The paper route job stopped last week, because I foolishly resigned when I got the gig with Pepito’s. As for busking… well, that’s more of a wild idea than a realistic plan.
“Busking? You only know three songs.”
“Five songs, and people move around, so they won’t catch on to my limited repertoire. Besides, I can always learn a couple more songs.”
“And what will you do if I, or your ma, come and catch you soliciting funds?”
“I can outrun you easily, Dad. The both of you. Rookie Ryan too.”
“Yeah, yeah. Smart-mouth. We have an alternative plan for you this summer. Busking is not a part of it. Tell you over dinner.”
“What? Why not right away? Are you finally paying for Wizarding Summer School now that I’ve grown out of it?”
“Wait and see.”

Author Bio:
Nina Rossing lives in Norway, where the winters are long and the summers short. Despite the brilliant nature surrounding her, she spends more time in front of her computer, or with a book in her hands, than in the great outdoors (though you may find her out on her mountain bike if the weather is good). She works as a high school teacher, which in her opinion is probably the best job in the world.

Book Excerpts

From chapter 2:
A few minutes later, the Chamber Elf opened the door and led them inside. The members sat in large chairs around three sides of the room while the senior member, Lord Ashur, sat alone on one end—his long white hair dangled over his bright red robe. Alex and Prince Darin saluted and knelt before him.
“Rise, both of you. Prince Darin, I see you’re with the Keeper again. What’s this adventure? I sent the Keeper to check on the cottage, not to explore.” Lord Ashur leaned forward in his large chair and gazed with amusement from under his white, bushy eyebrows.
“I apologize for the interruption, my lord, but Lady Alexin arrived with an escort of a dozen rebels, now in our custody. Apparently, they were searching for some documents, but couldn’t find them. The Keeper did. And I’d like your permission to review them.”
“Keeper, show me these documents.”
Alex unrolled the scrolls, handing him one at a time. She smiled as she watched his eyebrows move up and down.
He passed them around to the other members. “How did you find them when the rebels couldn’t?”
“They were locked inside a vault in one of the bedrooms. I missed it the last time I was there. Not only did it have these scrolls, but it also had this.”  She held up the black bag and pulled out the gold chest, handing it to him.
Lord Ashur gasped and stared at the beautiful chest. “What’s in here?”
“Open it.” Alex stepped back so Prince Darin could see.
He flipped the top open and pulled back the velvet cloth.  “Oh my stars!” He picked up one of the large diamonds in his hand. It flashed rainbows on the ceiling and walls.
The members stared and gasped and gathered around his chair for a closer look.
“How many are there?” Lord Mesner stared at it, captivated by its beauty.
“Five.” Lord Ashur cocked his head to the side. “Could these be the legendary Diamond Eggs?”
“May I?” Lord Root asked. “I saw them before they were stolen and disappeared. I took my Elves to see them in Weston—they’re the Crystals of Life. Years ago, my uncle, Lord Dormus, brought them to Eledon from his visit to the Star Elves.” He slid off his chair and rambled over; his blue velvet robe dragged along the floor. Lord Root was the Pixie Elf representative on the Council and the newest permanent member. He wasn’t much taller than Alex’s knees.

Chapter 3:
Prince Darin bowed to Lord Ashur. “While I was waiting for the Keeper, one of my ship’s captains delivered an urgent report. As you know, every month, the Water Elves send supplies to Seaward Isle. Two weeks ago, two of my ships, the Rambler and the Crustacean, set sail for the island and were due to return four days ago, but they haven’t shown up yet. I’ve sent several ships out to check the entry points to Seaward Isle, but they can’t be found. I’d like the Mentors’ help.”
“Of course. The entry points are the only things holding Seaward Isle to Eledon.”
Lord Odin rose from his chair. “This could be a disaster, my lord. The Mentors must give it high priority. Seaward Isle must not detach from Eledon. It could fall into the mortal world and take us with it. It must be fixed. It can’t be overlooked any longer.”
Alex’s eyes grew wide. This was a real problem. Concerned, she glanced at her grandfather. His face was pale and he was sweating. But she also knew he was depending on her to find a solution. She didn’t have a clue.
Lord Ashur frowned. “I agree this is a problem. Members, rise as we call upon the Mentors.” He rose slowly from his chair and raised his hands. “Mentors, greetings. We call upon you to assist us.”
In the middle of the room, a small flame appeared above the white pedestal. It was slightly larger than a man’s hand and emitted no heat—this was how the Mentors manifested themselves to the Elves. A female voice came from the flame.
“Lord Ashur and members…”
With a roar, the small Mentors’ flame erupted into a large fireball, touching the ceiling. From the raging fire, a man’s ugly face appeared and his deep voice boomed. He spoke in the mortal language called the common tongue; few in the room understood what he said. Alex, Lord Odin, and Lord Root understood it because they’d lived on Seaward Isle with mortals; Lord Ashur waved his hand to translate the man’s words into Elf.
“Who killed Shinjan?” The man’s dark beady eyes glared out at them. He had a large crooked nose; his skin was pasty-white, and he had a mane of scraggly black hair. When he opened his mouth, long flames of fire flowed out like snakes. “Who killed Shinjan?”

Chapter 4:
Off the coast of southern France, a luxurious yacht, at least eighty feet long with large windows and open spaces for sunbathing, rocked gently on the sea. In the lounge, four men sat on a leather sofa, watching the television monitor mounted on the wall with a view of Nemesis in the Elfin chamber. As he delivered his ultimatum to the Elves, the men cheered and shook their fists at the screen. When he ended his threats and the large fireball occurred, they burst into applause. The screen went black.
A few moments later, Nemesis entered the room through a black curtain to a standing ovation. He bowed, then pulled up his jeans and slicked his stringy hair away from his face. “I think they got the message. Ecstasy, get this stuff off my face.”
Ecstasy clapped loudly and beamed with pride. “Of course, my darling. Sit down. I knew you could do it.” Ecstasy was a man dressed as a woman and threw his arms around Nemesis’ neck and planted a wet kiss on his lips. As he backed away, he waved his wand. “Abracadabra presto change-o! I just love doing your make-up. I love everything about you.”
Nemesis’ nose shrunk in size and his color returned to tan. His ugliness was diminished, but didn’t go away. “All right, already. Stop it! Now get a message off to the Dynasty Sisters. They need go in first and get the wand.”
Ecstasy closed his eyes and waved his hands over the crystal ball. He mumbled a spell under his breath and peered inside. He leaned back with a sigh. “Oh dear! The girls have gone on a meditation retreat to mourn their grandfather Shinjan and can’t be disturbed for the next month.”
“What? Why didn’t you tell me about this? We did this for them. I told you to keep in touch with them.”
“I asked them yesterday and they said they were going to be here. I’m sorry.” Tears filled his eyes. “They lied to me…again.”
“Damn it! Don’t cry.” Nemesis rubbed his forehead. “All right. Someone else will go. Who wants to go in first?”
Silence.

Chapter 5:
Takura pushed his wire-rimmed glasses back on his nose and smiled. “John, Oliva, good to see you today. Very windy outside.”
Olivia ignored the fact that he didn’t call her by her correct name. For some reason, he’d never been able to. “I’ve never seen it this windy before, have you?” She rocked baby Will in her arms.
“No, never. There must be problem with entry points.”
“As a matter of fact, there is. One of the Elf supply ships just came back. Tulus, the ship’s captain, told me that he couldn’t find them. We were wondering if you knew what that meant.”
Takura’s eyes grew large and he gasped, shaking his head. “None of them?”
“That’s what he said.” Olivia sighed. “What does it mean?”
“It could mean danger for us. We could separate from Eledon and crash into Earth. Not good. Wind may be symptom of problem.” He took off his glasses and rubbed his eyes.
                “How’s your research going?”
“Difficult to study. Maybe Tulus will help us. I must ask him.”
“What about that other research you were doing on the ‘bubble,’ the shell over the island that keeps us inside?”
“I show you.” He led them to a table in the warehouse and smiled like the Cheshire Cat. “What do you think?”
“What is it?” Olivia leaned closer to it as John spun one of the propellers.
“A drone. We put camera on it and fly it into bubble.”
                “Really? When?”
“Yesterday. Rangor took us on barge and we went close to edge, but we stay far enough away not to get into currents. We fly drone into bubble and bring back video.” He typed a command on the computer and a picture of him appeared standing on the barge with a remote control in his hands. The drone flew away and the camera pointed at the bubble. At first, the sky and sea appeared normal, but as the drone approached the bubble, the camera lens fogged up. Suddenly, the lens cleared; the drone spun around several times and the picture turned to static. When the drone hit something metallic, it was thrown out and the lens fogged up again. Just as the lens cleared, it approached the barge and landed. The last image was a close-up of Takura’s jubilant face.

Chapter 6:
Once all of the presentations were completed, Lord Ashur called on Lord Hillen during the recess. “Lord Hillen, you mentioned that you have an interest in wizards and wizardry. Have you ever heard of an organization of wizards called the Octagon?”
“I’m fascinated by wizards, but I’ve never heard of this organization before. What do they do?”
“According to this wizard, eight of them formed a group called the Octagon.”
“There have been several organized groups of wizards in the past. Each time, they attempted to match their magical skills to complement each other, trying to make their group invincible. However, the problem is that they’re mortal beings and have short lives. In addition, petty jealousies have caused great turmoil. In many cases, the members killed each other in a fit of rage.”
The entire chamber grew silent as the members turned to listen.
“It appears as if we’re all curious, Lord Hillen,” Lord Odin said. “Now, can you tell us more about wizards? The one who visited us was named Nemesis.”
“Nemesis?” Lord Hillen rubbed his chin. “And why did he come here?”
“The Keeper was assigned a task by the Mentors to remove a beast held in a vial. The only way to remove it was for the Keeper to kill the wizard who created the spell. His name was Shinjan. She killed him and released the beast as the Mentors requested. Now, however, this Nemesis claims that this wizard’s death upset the balance in this Octagon, and he must avenge the death before replacing the wizard.”
“An odd rule.”
“Indeed.”
“I can only surmise that the death of one of the wizards created a vacuum that is tearing the group apart. The wizards of today lack both the skill and discipline of those from years past. Nemesis is a famous name for wizards, selected to show bravado and a tendency to violence. Apparently, someone wishes to continue that tradition. But I’m shocked to hear that the wizards came here to Eledon. We ran the last one out. What is the Keeper doing to stay safe?”
“The wizard is after me, my lord. I confessed to killing him since I was the one who told her how to reverse the curse.”
