About the Book

i-m-so-bad-at-paranormal-romance-you-don-t-even-know-by-jonathan-charles-bruceTitle: Improbables
Author: Jonathan Charles Bruce
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Abigail Wren’s new life fresh out of college is dull, even with her (almost) dream job at the local newspaper. The only real excitement she can get is found between the pages of an endless stream of paranormal romance novels she can’t help but love. Then, on a snowy night in December, Abigail catches a glimpse of what could only be described as a werewolf. Enamored with the possibility, her investigation leads her to discover a paranormal population—improbables—harmoniously living in the midst of humanity. Between making eyes at a perpetually grumpy werewolf and hanging out with a vampire with a lust for life (and liquor), Abigail’s life takes a shaky step out of the ordinary and into the fantastic. Just outside of the sleepy town of Whitewater, however, a force of rage is building. Born of hate and delusion, a living cataclysm threatens to devour everyone in its path—human or improbable.

Author Bio

Jonathan Bruce began writing what amounted to terrible Star Trek: The Next Generation fan fiction when he was four… provided that you accept that “forcing other people to write what he said” is the same thing as “writing”. Although the original manuscripts are lost (or perhaps destroyed), we can rest assured that his prose has improved significantly since then. After high school, he began writing and directing plays which gradually improved depending on whom you ask. He discovered his love of a good fight scene after writing a Dracula knock-off which took a 19th century classic and made it less about Victorian yearning and 300% more about stabbing things in the jugular. He has a Master’s Degree in History, thanks largely to his thesis focusing on MUSIC, a Milwaukee-based school desegregation campaign during the 1960’s. He also enjoys discussing/making fun of pop culture of the 20th century and reading books of a non-historical nature. In his off moments, you can catch him writing for fun or making inane movies about nothing in particular.

Blog Tour: Child of War - A God is Born by Lisa Beth Darling

About the Book
Title: Child of War – A God is Born
Author: Lisa Beth Darling
Genre: Adult Paranormal / Mythological Contemporary
Do you remember Damien? Raven makes that kid look like an angel.

In book #2 of the OF WAR Series, Ares settles down with his wife, Alena, to await the birth of their son, Raven. As Alena struggles to enjoy what should be a blessed event, prophetic visions of an adult Raven haunt her dreams. Are they true visions or false ones implanted by Cernunnos who told her the boy would bring glory to Ares but only pain and agony to her? The strong but delicate Fey is relentlessly bombarded by hostility from the Olympians making her yearn to be back on Ares’ secluded island home, far away from all the bickering and backstabbing that makes up Life on mighty Mount Olympus.

Before Raven is even born, Zeus outwardly despises him for his Fey blood given to him by his filthy Celtic mother. With no way out and no way to keep his family safe from his father, Zeus the God of Gods, Ares enters into a blood pact that could cost the God of War everything he holds dear.

After a harrowing birth wherein mother and son are nearly lost to Ares, it quickly becomes clear that Raven may be the most powerful and cunning Olympian ever born despite his muddled bloodline.

As Zeus, Apollo, and Aphrodite plot against the new family by carefully planting the seeds of rage and doubt in Raven’s mind, they turn son against mother. It appears as though Alena’s visions and Cernunnos’ prophecy are coming to life as Raven grows to be a very angry young man.

As the true past between the Olympians and Celts is revealed, the battle for Ravens’ mind and the ultimate control of Olympus begins. Before it’s over, the white snows of Olympus will run red with blood.

Author Bio

It was in the 4th grade when Lisa Beth Darling discovered she was a naturally gifted writer. For her very first creative writing assignment, the teacher asked the class to pen a story about a baby bird's first flight and read them to the class. Putting pencil to paper, Lisa was instantly whisked away by a force she couldn't explain. When they were finished, all of the children read their happy stories to the class. Not Lisa. She got up and told of how the baby bird flew too high, hit a plane, crashed to the ground and died. She told of how the mama bird and daddy bird cried of how even God was upset sending the rains pouring from the sky. The class was speechless when she finished all they could do was stare at her. The teacher kept her after class told her the story was very good but it was different from the others. She asked Lisa if she'd ever heard of Icarus and had she based her story on him. Lisa had yet to encounter Greek Mythology or hear a whisper of Icarus. As Lisa left the classroom the teacher again told her how good the story was but suggested she might want to write something happier next time. Perplexed,  Lisa turned and asked her teacher: "Why?" The teacher had no answer. Luckily for us, Lisa never took that teacher's advice.
Today she brings us complex multi-layered stories rich with the trials and tribulations that make up the world in which we live. Not one to be pigeonholed into any single genre, Lisa's stories revolve around the intricacies of couples from range the intimacy of lovers, to mothers and sons, and brothers and sisters.
Lisa Beth Darling is 49 years-old, lives in her hometown of New London, CT with her husband of nearly 30 years, Roy.  She is the author of more than fifteen novels along with several short stories and non-fiction books.

Book Excerpt

Certain help would never arrive in time, Alena allowed that instinct to take over.  She began pushing as she gasped for breath and sweat ran into her eyes.  With her knees up by her shoulders, she could nearly see between her splayed legs but as hard as she pushed, Raven's head did not emerge.  He didn't even seem to move downward as she dug in with her heels and gave it all she had with the next contraction.  Feeling as though her abdomen was caught in some wicked vice holding her in its unyielding grip Alena bore down, throwing her head back against the footboard as she held onto her knees, hoping for extra leverage.  Blood and fluids ushered forth, but Raven did not.  Instead of making his way down the birth canal, Raven continued his struggle to claw his way through his mother's stomach as though he knew that was his only true way out.
"A-Ares!" she screamed without any force of breath.  "Where are you?"  He picked a fine time to run down to the mortal world for a gallon of milk.
Her Son was not going to wait for his Father or his Grandmother to come aid in his arrival.  The contractions were so close together it felt like they never ended.  Just one long burst of unending agony as she struggled to give birth and Raven fought her from inside.  One hand on her knee, she tried to ease the baby downward with the other hand while she bore down again.  "I know it's t-t-tight but puh-lease."
Raven wasn't having any of it. He punched upward with a force so brutal that it knocked her hand away from her belly. Then he continued on, stretching upward until her undulating stomach looked like the Gut-Buster scene in 'Alien', and she was certain he would just explode out of her the way the slimy little alien had done, leaving a gaping bloody hole where her innards had once been.
"N-no!  D-down!"  Tears streaming down her ashen cheeks, Alena tried again to coax the baby downward as she pushed and prayed with all of her might.  More blood and fluid expelled and then, under her hand, she felt Raven move downward.  "G-good, good boy, good," she stuttered as she tried to catch her breath.  Wiping her silver hair away from her sweaty brow, she prepared to push again with the next contraction, but suddenly found her body rising into the air.  Looking up with startled eyes she saw Ares, he was lifting her off the floor and putting her on the bed.  "I th-ough-t you'd n-never…make it."
"I'm here.  I'm here," he soothed, looking at the bloody puddle on the floor.  "Everything's going to be all right now."
"This place is disgusting.  Why would you ever bring her down here?" Hera openly complained as she gave her surroundings a quick glance.
"I cleaned it, Mother!"
Letting out a grunt, she gave Ares a shove.  "Get out of my way."  Before she could maneuver between Alena's open legs to get a bead on the situation, another contraction hit.  Alena bore down hard.  "Stop, stop, stop," Hera commanded.  "Don't push, Alena."
"I have to…"
"Stop, I know it's hard, I know, but don't push."  Hera looked up from between Alena's legs where Raven was just beginning to crown, to Ares.  "Why did you wait so long to come get me?" she hissed.  "You knew how important this is!"
Panic rising within him as he tried to stay calm and hold Alena close, he roared at her through lips thinner than a dime.  "Do what you have to, Mother."
"It's too late."  Alena had done what any woman in her position would do and she pushed with each contraction until the boy dropped just enough to get his head past those slender hips, but his shoulders were too wide to make the same squeeze and now Raven was stuck in her pelvis.  Opening Alena's womb would do them no good.  Pulling the boy back through the narrow opening would only result in injury to him and her.  On the verge of losing her Grandson, the only thing the grand Goddess of All the Olympian Gods could do was stand here and watch both of them pass into the Underworld.
Not believing his Mother, Ares left Alena's side to stand at the end of the bed and inspect the precarious situation.  As they stood there watching Alena writhe in agony as she tried to hold back the urge to push, they saw Raven's feet push upward.  The little toes curled as though they were fists as he started slamming them against the inside of Alena's womb.  Listening to Alena's near silent screams and seeing her face gnarl and twist in a way he never wanted to see again, his Warrior's Mind hit upon a plan.  For a split second, he tried to talk himself out of it, but in his heart, he knew it was the only way to save them.  Reaching out cautiously with one hand, he held to it Alena's cheek as he stared into her stormy eyes.  "Do you love me?"
What a question!  Here she was in the deepest clutches of labor with his Son and Ares wanted to know if she loved him?  If this wasn't love, what was it?  "Y-yes."
He leaned in further as his hand slid down to her hip where the other was waiting on the opposite site.  "Do you trust me?"
"Yes."
"I love you, Alena."  With that, Ares planted his lips over hers.  In one brutal but mercifully swift motion, he pushed down on her hips with all of his strength and did the unthinkable.  With a loud snap, her slender hips cracked open like a clamshell.  His mouth over hers silenced the shriek of utter agony that went through her.
The way to freedom suddenly open, Raven began making his way toward it with much haste.  But he couldn't do it alone. m

Review: Desire and Duty (The Consort's Chronicles Book 1) by E.C. Jarvis

Desire and Duty

  • Print Length: 202 pages
  • Page Numbers Source ISBN: 1523215860
  • Publication Date: January 28, 2016
  • Language: English

Set in a fantasy world, Desire and Duty is the first erotic romance in The Consort’s Chronicles series.

The Emperor of Kienia is expecting his wife to provide him with a son. After twelve months of waiting, he’s growing impatient and Lenora realises her life may be forfeit if she can’t make good on her purpose. What follows is a tale of passion, intrigue, and sexual awakening.

In a world dominated by men, where a woman has only her body and her wits to rely on, Lenora will risk everything to protect her position and survive.

The general gist of this story is a bad marriage, a sexy assassin/protector, and a desperate woman full of twists, turns and some hot steamy moments.

This book is an erotic one set in historical times and a very good one at that.  I  enjoyed reading it so much, I finished it in one sitting. I couldn't put it down, I just had to keep going. Now, I'm anxiously waiting for the next one. It left me hanging and needing more.

This is the first story I've read from this author and I definitely will be checking out more.

About the Author

E.C. Jarvis is a British author working mainly in speculative and fantasy fiction genres. For the last thirteen years, Jarvis has been working her way through the ranks of the accountancy profession in various industries. During ten of those years she has also been writing.

“It was always a hobby. I’d knock a poem out every now and then, or enter something into a short story competition, with very little success, but that never stopped me. There has always been an underlying need to write. It comes and goes with varying intensity, but it’s always there, like an itch that needs to be scratched.”

Her first success at publishing was a poem in a collection titled Fear Itself published by Forward Poetry in 2012. Following a three-year hiatus where she “couldn’t even bring myself to write a shopping list”, 2015 saw a turnaround that has seen her write three books and publish one, which was later self-published at the start of 2016.

She was born in Surrey, England in 1982. She now resides in Hampshire, England with her daughter and husband.

Q) What made you branch out from writing fantasy into erotic romance?
A) I just had this idea in my head for a story. It was going to be a short story, really just to satisfy my own need to write it and then it just grew and grew. Once I got past the 10k word mark I knew it would be a whole book. Once I got past the half-way point I knew it would be a series and when I got to the end I knew there would be at least three books. Sometimes the stories just keep going and I feel it’s my job as a writer to let them grow and go with it. I don’t like sticking to the boundaries of a single genre anyway, my books tend to slot into multiple genre holes and that’s the way I like it. Lots of fingers in lots of holes…. Ha.

Q) What can you tell us about the setting of this story?
A) It is set in a fantasy world, somewhere similar to Britain in around the 1800’s with a little of the flair from the 1400’s thrown in for good measure. There are steam powered vehicles and printing presses in existence – a slight nod to my steampunk writing roots. It is based in a made up place called the Empire of Kienia, so imagine a Britain at the height of its empirical rule, full of sex and scandal and all that fun stuff.

Q) What inspired you to write this story in particular?
A) I took a lot of inspiration from Henry VII and his stalwart character with a penchant for beheading wives who didn’t satisfy his requirements, however the focus of the story is on Lenora, his wife. The initial idea for the book was influenced by a distantly mentioned sub-plot element in a story by my favourite author – The Emperor’s Edge by Lindsay Buroker. It’s not erotica but I can highly recommend her work.

Q) Can you tell us about your characters?
A) Lenora is a smart, strong and sexy woman. It’s a patriarchal society, wherein she has no power whatsoever and is fully expected to look pretty and birth children. That’s it. But as the story progresses she learns she does have some element of power and she is certainly smarter than the men have assumed her to be, so it’s a story following her growth as a person, and her trails of navigating a difficult world. Emperor Averys is a grumpy old bugger with next to no sexual appeal… Then there is Nathanial, our dashing hero. He too goes through a lot of growth in the book, and… well I can’t really tell you much more without giving away the plot, but there’s a lot of steamy encounters.

Q) Do you find it difficult to write the erotic parts of the story? Do you have to be in a certain frame of mind to write those scenes?
A) It’s like writing anything, if you’re tired and unenthusiastic then it’s difficult to write an energetic fight scene. If you’re sad then it can be tough to write an uplifting part. Naturally, if you’re not in ‘the mood’ then it can be tough to write sexy scenes. That doesn’t mean I’m sat at my laptop horny as hell whenever I’m knocking out a good sexual encounter between my characters and then I ravish my husband afterward for good measure, but some days the writing comes easier than others and it is greatly affected by mood.

Q) Who designed the cover?
A) http://www.amygdaladesign.net/ This lady is fantastic, even her website is pretty to just look at. I gave her a rough idea of what I wanted and she just ran with it.

Q) You mentioned that it is part of a series, when do you expect the next book to be released?
A) I’m writing it as we speak. It’s about half way through so I’m guessing it might be ready sometime in March/April 2016. At this point I’m planning on writing a trilogy, but we’re not there yet so we’ll have to see how it goes, I do have my other series ‘Blood and Destiny’ to complete as well. No rest for the wicked.

Excerpt

She stood in a thin slip, virtually see-through, admiring a pair of dresses she’d picked out and trying to decide between the two. A soft knock at the door startled her. She checked the clock quickly; it was only seven fifteen. She still had plenty of time left to get dressed and do her hair, so it shouldn’t be Averys turning up with anger aimed at her apparent tardiness. In any case, he didn’t usually knock.
“Who is it?” she called, looking around the room for something she could throw on quickly to cover herself. A frown crinkled her forehead when no one answered. She strode to the door, flinging it open, wondering if one of the page boys was having a joke. The guard outside flinched and grabbed for his rifle in a bumbling manner, acting in an equally bumbling style when he tried to put it away again.
“Ma’am?”
“Did you knock on my door?”
“Uh, no, Ma’am.” He looked up and down the corridor suspiciously.
“Did anyone knock on my door?”
“Uh, no, Ma’am?” He turned to face her, his back straightening though his eyes bulged out of his head.
Then she remembered what she was wearing—or not wearing. She swung the door shut indignantly.
A cold breeze trickled across her shoulders and she felt the hairs on the back of her neck stand to attention. She sidestepped, developing a distinctive sensation that there was someone in the room with her. Surely Averys wasn’t going to have her killed right now? Just moments before a formal gathering? She reached the bedside table and gripped the handle of the lantern, intending to swing it at any would-be assassin. She wouldn’t go down without a fight.
“Hmm.” A voice rumbled beside her ear and she froze on the spot. She wouldn’t get a chance to swing anything at anyone that close. “A lantern wouldn’t be very effective.”
She spun around and came nose-to-nose with Nathanial—or more like nose-to-neck as he stared down at her. A rush of emotions swept over her like a wave crashing on the shoreline. Had he come to kill her? Dared she hope he was here to sweep her into his arms and carry her off to some secret hideaway? Did he just want a quick fuck?
“Nathanial,” she said with more bravado than her constitution should have allowed.
“Ma’am.” He gave a partial bow and took a step backwards, clasping his hands behind his back. She looked from him to the door, to the open window, and back again.
“Are you here to kill me?”
His face crumpled slightly, then smoothed out to a neutral expression. Had she hurt him with that assumption? It wasn’t an unsubstantiated question, seeing as he was an assassin and had just managed to sneak past her guard and into her room quite skilfully. Whatever he was here for, he must have been very determined.
“No, Ma’am.”
She pushed a breath out between pursed lips, trying to will her thumping heart to settle. Noticing that she still clutched the bedside lantern, her ill-thought weapon of choice, she set it back on the table and smoothed her sweating palms down her dress—her see-through dress. She felt her face flush.
“For future reference, a blade would be more effective against a would-be assassin,” he said, eyeing the lantern.
She felt her face burn further still. “Well, I don’t have any of those handy.”
“None?”
“Only dresses and bedsheets.”
“Hmm.” He glanced around the room, more like a soldier doing a study of a battleground than a man perusing a lady’s bedroom.
“Nathanial?”
“Ma’am?”
“Why are you here?”
“The palace is distracted with the gathering. The Emperor is unlikely to order any assassinations this evening, at least not until after everyone has arrived. You have forty-five minutes until you are required.” He glanced over at the clock briefly. “Forty minutes.”
“And…you thought you would fill that time—”
“Tending to your needs.” His eyes flicked down the front of her dress in a flash. The admission and perusal set her insides alight, and she felt her muscles clamping down as though he were already inside and she wanted to hold him there, laying claim to him with her body.

Review: Sanyare: The Last Descendant by Megan Haskell

A human woman caught between two great faerie realms…

Trained as an elite fighter and educated in the ways of the elves, Nuriel "Rie" Lhéthannien has worked decades to be accepted into the High Court messenger service. It's a simple enough occupation, but in a realm where humans are treated as little better than slaves, it's a position she'll do anything to protect.

On a routine delivery in the Human Realm, Rie is attacked by assassins from the enemy Shadow Realm and framed as a traitor. Facing execution at the hand of an unmerciful king, she evades capture and crosses the portal into enemy lands to prove her innocence.

Surprising allies arise from the shadows, assisting her search and uncovering secrets she didn't know she kept. With the risk of discovery lurking at every turn, Rie must use every weapon in her arsenal to uncover the truth behind the attack. If she fails, death will be the least of her worries.

Sanyare by Megan Haskel was an exciting read showing the different realms. Not just fae but a mix of trolls, ogres and other fantasy creatures.

We follow Rie, a messenger from the light side, as she descends into the dark realm to find out who tried to kill her. I like that Rie is a strong female lead who doesn’t need or want a man’s help. She reminds me of Rey from Star Wars and I had that image of her throughout most of the book. I love the struggle of what she thought to be true and she learns that her life lessons had been one sided and has to embrace a new reality.

Then there is the love stories or love triangle. She trusted and became friends with the Blood Sith and fell for the fire Prince. Of course they both fall for her. Only she has to figure out which one will break her heart. Rie is a kick-ass, female lead who is turning the light and dark realms upside down. Haskel has created a fun new world to play in and I wouldn’t mind checking the dark world out myself.

I look forward to continuing the adventure and see which way Rie’s heart will lead her. 5 stars.

About the Author:

Legend has it, I was born with a book in my hands. When I was a kid, my mom would ground me from reading in order to get me to do my chores. To this day, I can readily ignore the real world in favor of the imaginary one lurking between the pages of my current addiction. My dad — also an avid reader — introduced me to Tolkien in my late elementary years, and I never looked back. I love escaping to worlds where magic and monsters are real, especially stories with kick-butt heroines and dangerously attractive heroes.

Despite my voracious book appetite, I didn’t start creative writing until I was working as a number cruncher in a big accounting firm. With an hour plus commute by train every day, and a demanding left-brain occupation, I needed a mobile creative outlet. A pen and paper are about as mobile as it gets! As the pages began to fill, I quickly moved onto a tiny laptop, and a writer was born. Now I get to create my own fantasies!

I currently live in Southern California with my wonderfully supportive husband, two daughters, and a ridiculously energetic dog. Sanyare: The Last Descendant is my first published novel, but I'm hard at work on the sequel, due out fall 2016. You can find out more about me and my books at www.MeganHaskell.com.
