Review & Blog Tour & Giveaway: Children of the Gods by Jessica Therrien

Oppression
Jessica Therrien
(Children of the Gods #1)
Publication date: September 2nd 2015
Genres: Paranormal, Young Adult
Elyse knows what it means to keep a secret. She’s been keeping secrets her whole life. Two, actually. First, that she ages five times slower than average people, so that while she looks eighteen years old, she’s closer to eighty. Second, that her blood has a mysterious power to heal. For Elyse, these things don’t make her special. They make life dangerous. After the death of her parents, she’s been careful to keep her secret as closely guarded as possible. Now, only one other person in the world knows about her age and ability. Or so she thinks. Elyse is not the only one keeping secrets. There are others like her all over the world, descendants of the very people the Greeks considered gods. She is one of them, and they have been waiting for her for a long time. Some are waiting for her to put an end to centuries of traditions that have oppressed their people under the guise of safeguarding them. Others are determined to keep her from doing just that. But for Elyse, the game is just beginning – and she’s not entirely willing to play by their rules.

Looking for a new book series to jump into? Then look no further than Jessica Therrien’s new series Children of the Gods, starting with book one, Oppression. This book is like Harry Potter series and Percy Jackson series got together and this was the product of their love. This first person Y.A. is full of adventure, fun, mystery and will get you emotionally too.

Elyse, knew she was different and never knew why. At thirty-nine years after her parents’ death she is about to discover why her parents we always in hiding and who she truly is. Knowing that you are a healer is a big burden to carry, especially when you are told you can’t use your powers to save a person you love. This start of her new life and know who she is leads you on an emotional journey of discovery. Finding out you are a descendent and so are your new friends can be a wild ride.

Therrien has created a fun new world that is also in our current world. No crossing train tracks here. This is one that I can share with my daughter and know that she and her friends are going to enjoy the adventures too. If you have a youth that likes Greek goods, H.P., or Percy then they too will have fun with this read. I am looking forward to book two Uprising.

A new YA series for the gods and from the gods! Thank you, Jessica Therrien for the Children of the Gods series. A Fantastic new approach to the children of the Greek gods.

Book One, Oppression. Magic, Mayhem and School! I loved the characters and the mythology behind this first book in the series. Therrien sets it up perfectly and then delivers the spike.

If you or your kids are into adventure and the paranormal, please grab up Oppression. I'm really looking forward to reading the next two books in the series, Uprising and Redemption.

Blog Tour and Review: Waterfall and Waterproof by Amber Garr

Book & Author details:

Waterfall & Waterproof by Amber Garr
(The Water Crisis Chonicles, #1)
Genres: Dystopia, New Adult

Synopsis book 1 - Waterfall:
The water is gone. The wars have begun.
Clean water is a luxury most can no longer afford. Climate change, industrial sabotage, and greed have turned country against country as each one tries to provide for its citizens. Terrorist groups target desalinization plants and frustrated governments hunt those who work against them. Rationing, sequestering, and patrolling have become routine at a time when there are too many people and not enough resources.
While the world around them disintegrates into chaos, Zach and Vivienne hope that their life in a government-run complex will retain some semblance of normalcy. But when attacks on their water supplies bring war to their sheltered community, they must accept their new fate. Stay and fight or flee and endure—it’s a difficult decision with lasting consequences.
Will they choose what’s safe? Or will they choose to survive?

Waterfall by Amber Garr follow two teenagers who are fighting for survival. In book one we learn about the water crisis and how the government was rationing in order to care for their citizens. War starts to break out and no one is truly safe. Zach and Vivienne are best of friends and along with their families are forced to find a new way of living once war breaks out.

The story is told in first person by each of the characters. Each chapter went back and forth between the young couple. What I liked is that the story picked up where the other dropped off but from a new perspective. It was like when an older couple that have been married for so long can tell a story together, it’s the same one just from a different angle. I also liked having a strong female lead. I mean physically stronger than her football playing friend and he was okay with her always there to save his butt. I felt like I was there on the road to survival with them, one of the pack. I would get so intently involved that I wouldn’t want to stop reading and go to bed.  I was glad to have books one and two so I could hurriedly continue on.

Synopsis book 2 - Waterproof:
Dying of thirst is the new reality.
Five years after the last drop of clean water disappeared, global societies collapsed and nuclear war shattered all hope of recovery. In a place now only a skeleton of its former self, survivors fight to avoid capture by the government. Forced to work in factories that produce the only drinking water available, those who go in, never come out.
Zach and Vivienne have lived as deserters since they were teenagers. Fighting amongst their own and scrounging for the necessities of life, they’ve learned to rely on each other in every way. Yet when tragedy strikes and the true objectives of the government facility are revealed, their world is ripped apart. A fate once thought to hold their demise may be the sole answer to their survival. Who can they trust? Who can they believe?
In this life, it pays to be waterproof.
Disclaimer: Waterproof is a new adult dystopian with sex, violence, and language that may not be suitable for a younger audience.

I love a good series that makes you sad when it ends and you NEED to rush out and get the next one. If you are too, start reading this one.  As we move on to book two, Waterproof, the best friends are becoming even closer and friendship could turn into something more. Zach and Viv realize how much they need each other not just romantically but for stability in their lives. Their world has been turned upside down and shaken and these to learn how important they are to the others survival. As if there weren’t enough happening the story takes a twisted turn that made my stomach turn in knots, but you have to read it to find that out yourself.

If you were a Hunger Games fanatic, you are going to enjoy this book. I loved HG and I found myself thinking which lifestyle would be worse. Plus, with the water shortage in CA, where I am from, this story seemed plausible and started to freak me out that it could happen. Amber Garr did a great job of pulling me in and being a part of the journey with Zach and Viv. She has created a world that hits all your sensory buttons.

Excerpt
Placing my hand behind her head, I gently roll her over and position myself on top of her. I’m going to make this girl feel the depths of my love if it’s the last thing I do in my life. “I love you,” I whisper a breath away from her lips then cover her mouth with mine. I take my time kissing her then pull away slightly. “I’m going to love you and only you until the day I take my last breath,” I tell her softly before meeting her lips again, claiming them with mine. This time, I kiss her longer but still don’t breach her mouth with my tongue. Again, I pull away just a bit but whisper into her mouth in hopes that my words will not only weave themselves into her mind but also into her heart. “Love is love. It comes without strings, without obligation, without judgment, without fear. It is unconditional and all-consuming. I couldn’t separate my love from you if I tried, so please stop trying to push me away because I’m not going anywhere, baby.”

Review
This is a contemporary romance told in the first person perspective and bounced between the two main characters, but not in to extreme a way. It was easy to follow.

Cassidy had such a heart breaking childhood, that it was good that she found the twins when she did. I loved how he knew her so well and cared so much for her, she needed it. I loved how they were each others one and only and never regretted it. Even though this is book 5 and I haven't read the first 4, it can be read as stand alone but I will definitely be checking out the other 4 and following the series from now on .

I have decided I really like this authors writing style and look forward to reading more.

Available at Eternal Press

In the first person narrative of Vienna Sky by Josh Sinason, we follow a young man, Archie, who has the memories of a CIA Agent. As if high school in the poor part of town in New Jersey wasn’t enough for this kid, headaches, crazy dreams and feeling everything that happens in those dreams are becoming the norm for Archie. Upon meeting a mysterious man some of Archie’s questions are getting answered but soon many more a rise. Like who is the pretty girl the keeps popping up in the midst of drug lords and double agents.

Now, to start off, the beginning of the book confused me. I didn’t realize that one minute he was on the bus and the next it was two adults talking. It took me a few to realize that Archie was having a dream. Eventually you get used to the sudden change of real time vs. memory/dream time. Once you get to know all the players your brain catches up with the changes. I will say that Josh Sinason did do an amazing job at giving you lots of sensory detail, the grittiness. You can see it all unfold before your eyes, feeling and seeing everything through Archie’s story. There is violence but it wasn’t overly done. He did go into detail on the pain of injuries and whizzing of bullets. If you are into spies/who done it/mystery type stories with a hint of sci-fi this is your book.

About the Author:

Excerpt 2

Again, I ignored my gut telling me to go see her right away. I sat there and watched from a distance.  It was standard procedure when confronting an asset that’s been left unattended anyway.  Still, I was looking forward to getting this paranoid streak out of my head with the rest of Agent Stephen Locke when this was all over.

The First National Bank of Vienna was an old brick art deco building covered in sleek new tinted glass windows.  The bricks were worn and bleached from too many winters, but the glass was brand new and freshly cleaned twice a week top to bottom.  There was a front gate with a wrought iron angel sculpture with massive wings and a guard that was a solid 230lbs and knew how to handle himself.  The place wasn’t kidding about security.  Even the window washers had background checks on top of background checks.  It was a hard building to get into, but not impossible.  I picked up patterns: where maintenance trucks were parked, when the guards switched spots.  I saw gaps in their system. They weren’t huge but they were enough for someone quick and small to get through.

Aside from the MI6 guy at the table behind me with the Sig 229 under his arm tailing someone on a completely different case, there was not a single spy to be found.  I surveyed the building on three sides over the hour and didn’t see anything suspicious.  I guess it was time to meet my asset.  Although, in all the surveying and spy hunting, I never really thought of just how I was going to get into the building.

The easiest way would be a zip-line from the building next door but I couldn’t think of any way to get one on such short notice, so I needed another way in.  I didn’t have Locke’s CIA resources, so I had to use what I had on me, what even Locke didn’t have: the face of a child.  Although, I really wanted to try that zip-line thing, Locke remembers the training course at Langley; it seemed fun to me.

“Excuse me, sir,” I said in German, as I did my best to act shy with my hands in my pockets and my head down low.  “Mr. Raines, my father, was just dying for a pastry.  I’m to bring it to him post haste.”

“He didn’t clear it with me.  You’ll have to wait here while I call him.”

“Well, um.”  I was backing away slowly.  I’d have to go back late at night. Maybe I can tail him and drug him or memorize the shift schedule and make sure to get them right at the switch and sneak in.  It’d take a few days, but maybe I could get that zip-line and maybe some surveillance equipment. I just needed a burn phone and—

There she was walking out with her bagged lunch to enjoy her lunch hour.  The sunlight hit her hair just right for me to see an auburn gleam from her highlights.  It was like she was actually wearing a halo.  Her bright green eyes lit up like one of those bronze statutes.

“Actually, never mind. Dad shouldn’t be eating the sugar anyway.”  I handed him the bag and quickly dashed across the street, holding my empty cup of coffee the entire time and the spring in my step so I wouldn’t look like I was running after her.

Locke had long since got used to tailing people.  The weirdness and uneasy feeling he had the first few times was a distant memory to him.  To me, following a girl who I never laid eyes on before that day but had dreams about every night for the last week, was awkward.  I mean, being turned down for the high school dance in front of the entire class awkward. Just like then, you power through and focus on what you want. After a few minutes, all the awkwardness melts away and you’re in genuine spy mode.  It was weird, but in that moment, tailing a girl I knew but never met because of someone whose mind was downloaded into mine, I felt like a real spy.

I followed a good half a block behind, sometimes farther, sometimes closer.  The trick to a good tail is to not follow the book on what makes a good tail.  Even someone untrained can tell when someone behind is walking just a little too deliberately.  So, being awkward gave me an advantage.  I had a lot of training at Park Slope High.

I tailed her a few blocks until we got to the Athena statue outside the parliament building where she sat and unpacked her lunch.  I kept my distance, still holding my empty coffee cup, pretending to take a sip every now and then.

The coast was clear; we were relatively alone.  All I had to do was approach her and tell her she was in trouble, we could go the embassy and get a flight back to New York.  I felt a little guilty about pulling her out of Vienna but—

“No way,” I said as I dropped my coffee cup.  “Not now.”  It was on the clear other side of the parliament gardens, but I could see it.  The way he stood there, the way he held his jacket tight so no one could see his gun. It was clear.  This guy was here to start something.  I started thinking about ways to get over there and disarm him without taking my eyes off Rebecca.  I was about to move around the other side, drawing him back toward the maintenance entrance.  Right then, I wondered if the gun in my backpack was loaded.

Reviews:

Spinner by Michael J Bowler was a fantastic suspense-thriller.  It is not the type of book I would normally pick up and read but I found myself unable to put it down and here’s why. First the main character and his friends are all in Special Ed. As a Special Ed teacher this makes me giddy. I have worked with “these” boys. The mannerisms, bonds of friendship and the emotions of each kid is spot on. I felt like each boy I had worked with at one point in my career. Spinner is in a wheelchair and has the ability to heal people. Because of this people are after him, wanting to use his abilities for evil.  He also has nightmares which become reality. Reason two is the subtle religious tones in the book. Spinner feels the one man he can confide in is the Catholic priest at the local church. Even he has some changes of the heart as he helps Spinner and his friends solve the mystery of how Spinner came to be. Another is the amazing way the characters deal with one of the boys being “different”. I don’t want to give spoilers so I will just say that the young boy did not need to be afraid to open and share his life. Lastly, and I think the biggest message in the story, is that even though bad things happen to you or in your life does not make you bad. We all have the choice to choose between the light and dark sides, good vs. evil; however you want to label it.  Each sub story in here was intriguing. I wanted to know more about each of the boys that helped him and called him friend.  There are so many great moments in this book that to share would spoil it for you. If this were a movie I would be hiding under a blanket holding my bestie’s hand and a tissue in the other. One moment I was scared, next saddened, and followed by a wash of relief. There are happy and funny moments too, so don’t worry, but have your blanket and tissue close and a mug of hot tea. I will read on, I want to know what happens to Spinner and his friends. 5 stars

Spinner by Michael J. Bowler is an exceptional roller coaster of a book. It’s been a while since I’ve read any YA, but this book was fantastic.
Our hero is a boy named Alex. He has spina bifida, is in Special Ed and has to live in a foster home run by an evil hag. He is extraordinary. Bowler has given him the angst and fears of any teenager, but a charming depth and poise we all hope our children will have. He is surrounded by his friends, an eclectic group of boys also in the Special Education program at his school. Each one is different and exceptional.
I really enjoyed the paranormal and religious mythology of this book. It took and original concept and wove it intricately through a variety of well-known religions. I loved that the boys had limitations, not just Alex’s spina bifida, but their mental restrictions, and still managed to find a way to understand. Not just one another, but whatever was thrust at them.
This is a YA book, but it is gritty and real and not for the faint of heart. There is danger, adventure and evil… real evil. The characters are fantastic, and the relationships intense.
I couldn’t put this book down. I read it in about 12 hours, and had to force myself to go to sleep. If you are looking for a adventure, mystery full of depth and originality, this is the book for you. 5 stars! Can’t wait to find out how the journey continues!

Chapter One
What Are You?
Alex felt uneasy as he lay in his bed and listened to the wind outside. It had been an okay day at school – he’d only been called “Roller Boy” twice, which was almost a world record. After school, he’d kicked it at Roy’s house and they cranked some Hawthorne Heights tunes and chilled. Even Jane hadn’t bitched at him. So why can’t I sleep? He didn’t know the answer. His eyes returned to the dancing shadows that flitted across his floor from the window. His drapes were closed, but the wind whistled through the trees, and the shadows mesmerized him. The patterns of light and dark pulled on his eyelids, dragging him slowly under. A dream loomed at the edges of his consciousness. One of those dreams. Sleep overcame him, and the dream began….
Ms. Ashley trudged down a flight of stairs from her second floor apartment to street level, carrying several overflowing bags of trash. The traffic sounds were omnipresent, but otherwise the night was calm and clear.
A slight breeze ruffled her long brown hair as she slunk quickly to the rear of the complex. Rounding the building, she passed alongside a sloping hill of ivy-covered ground toward the row of trashcans in the far corner.
Looking chilled and unsettled, Ms. Ashley lifted one lid and struggled to get all her bags in without spilling anything.
A rustling noise startled her and she whipped her head around to the left.
The ivy-covered hill ascended upward into darkness, but there was no movement. Only a creepy silence.
She quickly tossed her bags into the can and dropped the lid back in place with a hollow clang.
Suddenly, a large cat dropped onto the top of the can from somewhere above. She uttered a startled cry and leaped back a few steps.
The cat meowed and she chuckled, extending one slightly trembling hand. The animal snuggled against it, wanting to be stroked. She ran her fingers through the fur around the cat’s neck and under its chin.
More rustling leaves drew her attention to the ivy.
The darkness in this corner was deep and penetrating, making the vines and leaves snaking their way up the slope barely visible. Another cat materialized from beneath the thick cover of ivy. Then another. And another.
In seconds, the hillside crackled and seethed with cats of all shapes and sizes. Their glowing eyes shone like eerie beacons in the night.  The cat beneath Ms. Ashley’s fingers hissed and swiped its claws at her, raking the top of her hand and drawing copious amounts of blood.
Startled, she cried out and yanked her hand back, gazing in shock at the dark liquid gushing forth and spilling onto the concrete at her feet.
Terror etched her face.
She cautiously backed away.
The cats crouched on the hillside, poised and threatening.
The huge one she’d been petting wailed into the night, and then they were on her, leaping and clawing at her face and hair. Hundreds of cats streamed down the hillside and flung themselves at her while the big one sat and watched like a general commanding his troops.
Ms. Ashley screamed, but loud traffic sounds drowned out her cries. Flailing wildly, she turned and stumbled along the side of the building toward the street, desperately crying out for help.
Claws dug into her back and raked across her neck.
Teeth sunk into her arm.
She shrieked in agony as they yanked out chunks of her hair and raked at her legs, shredding her sweat pants and digging viciously into her soft flesh.
Blood spilled from everywhere on her body.
The street loomed just ahead. She tossed one cat off in a frantic attempt to save herself, only to have three more replace it. She clearly didn’t have much time before she’d topple beneath a tidal wave of claws and fur.
A large truck roared along Lincoln Boulevard as Ms. Ashley staggered toward the curb. The headlights were bright and blinding. The biggest cat now flew from the retaining wall at her face and gouged a chunk of flesh out of her cheek, exposing the bone. She wailed in agony.
Her knees buckled, but Ms. Ashley managed to stay on her feet while stumbling headlong into the street at a frantic pace.
Suddenly aware that the truck was almost on her, she clutched at the nearest light post in desperation. One bloodied hand caught the post and slowed her momentum as the cats ceased their brutal attack. She gesticulated frantically with her free hand, hoping to attract the attention of the driver. With her urgent gaze fixed on the truck, she didn’t see the figure in black leap from behind the retaining wall right at her.
Strong hands pressed hard into her back and propelled her forward.
The truck mowed her down in a splatter of blood and gore, flinging her broken body to the pavement and then crushing it beneath massive tires.
As the truck screeched to an ear-piercing halt near the corner, the figure in black melted into the darkness. Several cats sniffed the dead woman's remains before they, too, disappeared into the shadows. The first cat was the last to depart, watching as the horrified driver jumped from the truck cab and pelted toward Ms. Ashley’s broken body.
The cat seemed to grin before vanishing into the night…
Alex screamed and bolted upright in bed, sweating profusely, his young face etched with horror, hair plastered to his sweat-sheened forehead. Heart thumping with urgent terror, he scanned his darkened room. The door leading outside was closed, but the ominous shadows still crept through the window. His desk was messy as usual, and the door to his bathroom stood ajar, but he’d left it that way. Everything looked like it had before he fell asleep.
Dropping onto his pillow, Alex fought to control his breathing and calm his pounding heart. A dream. That’s all it had been. He’d known one was coming, and he’d been right. God, he hated those dreams!  Poor Ms. Ashley. He lay there, sweat making his t-shirt cling uncomfortably to his chest as his heart rate slowly drew down. Could this dream be like the one about his parents? He hadn’t had one like that in years. It seemed so real!
He lay in bed worrying about the morning, and what he’d find when he got to school, even though there was nothing he could do to change anything.
Gradually, he calmed down; the tree branches outside tapping against the house lulled him to sleep. The last image to assail him before he went under was that ugly-ass cat grinning at him before running off into the dark.

He has also been a volunteer Big Brother to eight different boys with the Catholic Big Brothers Big Sisters program and a thirty-year volunteer within the juvenile justice system in Los Angeles.
He has been honored as Probation Volunteer of the Year, YMCA Volunteer of the Year, California Big Brother of the Year, and 2000 National Big Brother of the Year. The “National” honor allowed him and three of his Little Brothers to visit the White House and meet the president in the Oval Office.
He is currently working on a sequel to Spinner.
His goal as a YA author is for teens to experience empowerment and hope; to see themselves in his diverse characters; to read about kids who face real-life challenges; and to see how kids like them can remain decent people in an indecent world.
