Tuesday Takeover Spotlight: CV Larkin

I live in an odd, well wintered, little corner of New England with my husband and our dog that is not a dog, and one that should have been a dragon. There, I drink copious amounts...of tea, obsess over imaginary worlds, listen to deafeningly loud music, renovate on a timetable that would put the Winchester Mansion to shame, and steal away to unexplored places whenever the opportunity presents itself.

Can you share a little of your current work with us?

Absolutely! Silver and Dust just came out which is very, very, exciting for me. The character interactions are some of my favorite things, so here’s a juicy little snip-it of Pixie’s first run in with the Unseelie Sidhe Eamon.
““What color are my eyes?” he asked.
“Why?” She was staring at him as if he would disappear the moment she looked elsewhere.
“Would it not stand to reason that a drug induced hallucination might be distinctly contrary to my actual aesthetic?”
“Are you always this formal?”
He leaned in closer. “I am told that I am less so in the throes of passion.”
She flushed and it was a lovely complement to the blue of her hair. Excitement burned unchecked beneath his skin.
“Tell me,” Eamon resumed. “What color are my eyes?”
“They’re a lot of colors,” she answered.
He silently cursed the frail hope that had begun to seed in his chest. She shook her head and stared at him more intently.
“Mirrors are a lot of colors. That’s how I know it’s the drugs.”
Mother night. She was staring directly through his glamour as if it were non-existent. How precious, and still, one could never be overly cautious.
“Tell me your name.” Eamon pushed a delicate thread of compulsion into the request under the guise of expediency.
“Pixie.”
Half truth.
“You’re too well mannered for a Pixie. Tell me your given name.”
“Penelope. I hate it.”
“I don’t.”
She flushed again, turning a deep scarlet as he dragged her index finger to his mouth. He exhaled onto the pad of her finger and felt her shiver in his hand. He tongued his lower lip and she let out an utterly charming squeak.
“Tell me,” he said.
“Sliver,” she answered, fixating on his mouth. “Your tongue is silver.”
“It is textured as well.” He ran the pad of her index finger down the center. Human without a trace of fae anywhere in her system. Penelope tasted of recent fear, pigment, and overly saccharine espresso. There was a harsh chemical aftertaste to her skin that supported her claims of medication. Poisonous shit to be sure. Eamon sampled her lust... and found her untouched. The harsh clatter of papers distracted from further exploration.
“Ribbed, for her pleasure,” she said staring at him. Immediately following the statement’s exodus from her mouth she winced, and frantically shook her head. “Ohmygod, who says that!?! I’m so awkward...I have to go.”
Eamon grinned as she wrenched her fingers from his grasp and dropped to her knees. Penelope frantically scraped together the loose sheets of paper littering the linoleum flooring. He knelt to offer assistance by collecting a couple of pages. He glanced down at the content of the material in his hand and folded it smartly before sliding the flyer into the pocket of his trousers. Penelope bolted for the stairwell and Eamon watched her frazzled retreat. That she was so beguiling was a pity. On her own, she would not be long for this world.”

Who designs your covers?

Sam Furst. He’s amazing. He designs horror props, monster t-shirts, and all other things fantastic. I’m very lucky to have him designing for my books.
Do you have any advice for other writers?  I found with my first book that I had the inclination to add scenes and extra words to get a point across, but simplifying and subtraction turned out to be a much more elegant solution. Beyond that? Write the ideas you’re in love with, avoid the canned phrases we all hear 857,937 times a day, and only run with the advice that works for you. Discard everything else.

Do you have any writing rituals or certain things you do to aid your writing process?

Nah, I just try and put the words on the computer screen as much and as often as possible.

Favorite snack and thing to drink while you write?
I drink stupid amounts of tea. I have cabinets full of the stuff. My back room should moonlight as a tea shop.

ebook or print? Both, I couldn’t survive with only one format.
junk food or sweets? Junk food.
dogs or cats? Dogs
tea or coffee? Tea
dark or light colors? Dark
angels or demons? Progeny- it’s a Courting Shadows thing.
paranormal romance or historical romance? Paranormal
Boxers or Briefs? Commando
Control Freak or Careless Jerk? Control Freak...unless it comes to opening paper mail, in which case I’m a careless jerk.

Must read books:
Exit to Eden, by Anne Rice
Brave New World, by Aldous Huxley
Wuthering Heights, by Emily Bronte
The Dresden Files, by Jim Butcher
Lover Awakened, by J.R Ward

Evan O'Reilly was used to fighting demons. A bounty hunter for the underworld, he was always precise. Efficient. Ruthless. But that was before he had to battle with his own.

Being a powerful deity had its advantages, and Alethia, goddess of wind and shadows, was thankful she could watch over her friend completely undetected. That was, until his carelessness began to garner the wrong kind of attention, leaving her no choice but to step in.

Now, Evo is being hunted by his own kind, closely followed by a revenge hungry demon. He is on the run, and Alethia is running with him. As Alethia fights for him, she is forced to face an agonizing truth: to save him, she may have to lose him forever.

L.J. Sealey was born and raised in a little Welsh town by the sea. It rains a lot, so she often has a great excuse to sit at her writing desk and while away the hours at her laptop.
She still lives in N.Wales and when she’s not travelling around the country working with her husband – who is a professional singer – or singing backup vocals herself, she likes to read and watch her favourite TV shows which normally includes plenty of CSI, The Vampire Diaries and endless amounts of sitcoms. Being addicted to reading about vampires, demons, shifters and angels, she has always had a thing for all things paranormal and is a big sucker for impossible love stories. So it was inevitable that when she started writing herself she would mix the two together.

WLK synopsis

There Are No Coincidences….

Given a fairy tale life by the clan of dragon shifters that rescued her as a little girl, Emma Sinclair long ago accepted she might never solve the mystery of her heritage. Of course, that was before she could feel the traitor’s pain, before she knew he was slipping away. And before the unthinkable happened… he called to her in the language of his kin.

The Universe Does Not Make Mistakes…

Captured by his brothers. Imprisoned in a cave. Bound in silver chains. Andrew knew his days were numbered. He accepted his fate. Knew he was getting what he deserved. Hallucinations of his long dead parents were his only solace in the debris of a wasted life. Then the scent of salt, sun and fresh air entered his prison. The fragrance stirred visions of expressive brown eyes, a smile that rivaled the sun and a voice that was a balm to his tattered soul. He clung to the memory of her. She became his lifeline…his only hope of survival…

Fate Will Not Be Denied…

One doomed dragon shifter. One very special woman. One destiny no one could have predicted. Will they save dragon kin or destroy it?

5 Stars

This is the seventh, and final book, in The Dragon Guard Series.  I'm a little upset about it being the final book.  I love this world that Julia Mills has created. It just sucks you right in.  I will always be Team Devon!  I have been hooked from the first word in the first book.  This is one of my favorite series.  You can read these as standalones, but there is a storyline that continues through out all seven books.  You would miss out on all the other alpha dragons finding their mates and that mate bringing each and every dragon to their knees.

Andrew O'Brien, the traitor has finally been caught.  He will have to face the tribunal for what he has done.  But plans change when he realizes that Emma is his mate.  He will do anything to protect her, including dying for her.

Andrew changes so much in this book.  We see him go from completely evil, to loving Emma so completely and asking for forgiveness.

"Andrew O'Brein did not want to be with anyone, he was a loner and capable of dealing with anything and everything on his own...but...he wasn't.  He not only wanted to be with Emma, to be a better person because of her, he needed to be with her.  Needed to show her that her faith in him was not unfounded.  He just knew if he could get back there, e could be the man and dragon she needed."

Emma Sinclair has been raised by the dragon clan, she has no clue about where she cam from.  She is the jewelry maker.  Most people knew she was special, just not how special and what she is exactly.  I couldn't wait to find out about her history.

When we find out who Emma really is, lets just say I was not expecting that.

Hidden pasts and all questions are answered in this book.

Sydney's scenes had me crying.  She is one amazing little girl.  I had a feeling about why she was so special and I was partially right.

This is such an amazing read that is full of surprises.

And we get the full prophecy!

Andrew is well on his way to redeeming himself completely.  His brethren are starting to come around, especially after what he did for Grace.

"Emma O'Brien, I cannot conceive of a forever where you are not the center of my world.  I love you, with everything I am and everything I hope to be."

Andrew really is the "Special One" and the Universe does not make mistakes!
WLK excerpt

“Emma! Emma! Open this damn door!” Devon bellowed.

This was the third time in two days he’d pounded on her door however on this occasion he seemed really upset, almost desperate. She tried to get up, had tried every time. Wanted to answer the door or at least call out to him. Needed to tell him she had the flu or whatever it was and would talk to him when she felt better. The problem was no matter how hard she tried, not even a finger would move. Her throat was so dry from crying and lack of drink she could only whisper. She couldn’t remember how long it had been since she’d actually left her bed.

All of this had started forty-eight hours earlier with the voice of the traitor sounding in her head and reached its first climax when she’d collapsed on her living room floor. He’d spoken directly into her mind, had been doing so since the moment he touched the land of their lair. As shocking as hearing him like he was a part of her was the fact that he called her his mate had been the trigger for her passing out. On the heels of his mind-boggling revelation, the traitor had begged her to come to him. Then he had reached for her. Not like you reach across the table but through some invisible link she felt in the very depths of her soul and would’ve sworn had never been there before.

Pain accompanied his pleas. A crippling aching that permeated every cell of her being. It has finally become too much for her to bear. Emma landed face first in front of the couch, barely missing the corner of the coffee table with her head.

Wave after wave of pain racked her body for hours. When the sun began to shine through the slats of her blinds hanging on the picture window the pain had receded. It had been almost twenty minutes since the last barrage of agony. The longest it had stayed at a dull throb since she’d hit the floor. Working up her courage, Emma rose to her knees.

Cold sweat peppered her upper lip, wet her spine and ran down her arms. Taking a long deep breath in an attempt to end her panting and hopefully not hyperventilate, she steadied herself and began crawling towards her bedroom. Halfway to her destination, the pain returned with a vengeance. Her muscles knotted, feeling as if they were pulling away from her bones. Cramps like nothing she’d ever experienced set her insides on fire, a blaze that tore through her abdomen and chest forcing the air from her lungs. Spots danced before her eyes before she once again found herself laying on the cold, hard tile.

With no windows in the hallway, Emma could only guess how long she’d been there when she was finally able to pry open her eyelids. Struggling to her knees for the second time, she was determined to make it to her feet and used the wall as a crutch. Finally standing, she put one foot in front of the other, her shaky legs threatened to buckle out from under her as, she finally made it to her bed. Moaning, she fell face forward onto the sage green comforter praying to the Heavens that she never had to move again.

Over the next few hours she floated in and out of consciousness never quite sure if what she heard and saw was real. Andrew’s voice the only constant as she battled whatever force was attacking her body, mind and soul. He would plead with her to come to him, speaking beautiful words in the ancient language of the dragon kin, telling her that she was the only one that could end his torment. Then he would demand, his tone sharp, his words direct, as if he would accept nothing but her complete surrender to his will. In between, he would whisper her name over and over all the while pushing his need into her.

His eyes peered into her soul. She had no idea how but his mismatched stare followed her from consciousness to restless sleep and back again, ever present, keeping watch over her. When one especially horrific wave of torment came upon her, their gazes locked. The agony she saw reflected in those hauntingly imperfect eyes confirmed her worst fears, it was not her pain but his attacking her.

Why are you doing this to me?” She whispered, barely able to make out her own words.

Horror overrode the ache in his eyes and seemed to push the agony from his tone. He spoke with command and a clarity that baffled her considering his pain. “I’m not doing anything, a thaisce. It’s our connection…our bond. If you come to me, I hope to free you from my influence.”

“But…” Her attempt to answer through mindspeak, as he had spoken to her, was cut short by Devon’s first round of knocking at her door.

The next two days was an endless loop of pain, visions and nonsensical conversations with the traitor in her head only interrupted by the few precious moments when she was overtaken by exhaustion. Andrew’s pleas became more insistent, the power he was pushing through more forceful as she continued to explain she was trying to come to him but physically unable.

You must! It’s the only way I can save you.” Was the last she heard of him. Their bond had gone silent. She had called to him but to no avail, he had simply stopped communicating.

But I still hurt…
