Group Review: Inherited Thorns (The Empathetic Enchantments Series Book 1) by Sammie Sidelinger

Inherited Thorns
(The Empathetic Enchantments Series - Book One)
Author: Sammie Sidelinger

In the first installment of The Empathetic Enchantments Series, you will find out what kind of shape shifter lies dormant within the Randall families heritage—one never before written about in this light.

When trouble arises and laws must be implemented amongst the most powerful warlocks, an enforcer is sent in. Bad boy Acer Randall fears nothing—that is, except two things. The centuries-old family curse that transforms him into a bizarre freak of nature and the foreign emotions that stirs within himself by a seductive enchantress, Haven. Her pull, like that of a siren, cannot be ignored; yet for self-preservation he must stay away.

Haven promised, on her coven's behalf, to end Acer's life, but can she bring herself to do what must be done when her feelings for him are so unbridled?

How is it that Acer, one of the most in-tune empaths on earth, is unable to read Haven's emotions?

Has she clued into Acer's truth and cast a spell from which he cannot break free?

I liked this story, it was very entertaining. I knew it was paranormal but was surprised at the route it took. It was refreshing to read something a little different. They experience some trouble in the warlock community that they need to take care of. This story is told in the first person narration. He is from the backwoods of Maine and was, and is, trying to make a life for his self, while trying to mange his curse. I loved how she kept him at arms length even though she was attracted to him too. Being a first book by this author she did a great job and I look forward to reading more from her.
I can't wait for Ash and Chloe's story.

Inherited Thorns by Samantha Sidelinger, a paranormal romance witches, warlocks and shapeshifters. Acer Randall has loved and left many ladies but new girl Haven has him feeling things he is not used to. His whole life he has felt unable to truly love and be loved because of his family’s curse. To protect her coven she needs to kill Acer, but will her heart let her? The road to happiness is long, twisted ride. Both are strong willed and together maybe they can find happiness.
It was an interesting story. I was intrigued by Acer’s story of being a shape-shifting empath and his family’s curse. For a ladies man he does have a caring heart that he tries to hide from everyone including himself. I did enjoy the story and wanted to know more about the character in spite of some technical issues with the writing.  There were some parts that were full of detail and then suddenly a character was there without explaining how or why. The first was when he was sitting in a bar, drinking with his friend and then suddenly was petting his dog. There were also a few conversations near the end of the book that I was confused as to who was speaking and thought maybe part of the convo had been deleted. With that being said the story itself was a fun read and I would read the books to follow. 3.5 stars

I really enjoyed this book. I thought it was an original world with engaging characters and a good plot line. Ms. Sidelinger has an easy to read style with the right amount of description. She has given us multi-faceted characters that are flawed in numerous ways.
I loved the depth of the main character Asher, as well as the story being told from his point of view. Haven, is just as mysterious. We find that not everyone is who they seem in this world ruled by paranormal beings. Ms. Sidelinger has created an interesting mythology and a world that I look forward to revisiting.

My issues with the book are as follows: I see there is an editor listed, however, there are basic grammatical errors. Not only are there grammatical issues, but often the story seems to jump around, losing its path.  I found myself being pulled out of the story several times and having to look back where I had just read to make sure I hadn’t missed something. And this is just a pet peeve of mine, but when you introduce a character (even a pet) make sure it sticks around, or give me a plausible reason why it’s no longer there.

Despite these issues, it is still a great book. I give it 4 stars.

About the Author:

Sammie Sidelinger, lives in the seasonal coastal state of Maine with her three amazing boys and her husband whom, she fell in love with while in middle school. Yes, in this instance the bad boy did work out for this girl next door. They are thrilled to raise their three handsome children in the place where if you don't like the weather, wait five minutes it will change. Sammie tries to look at life the same way as she does the weather. Nothing is permanent including work which she fortunately or as some may think, unfortunately found out, allowing her the time to follow her dreams.
Her love for the supernatural and the stories passed through generations has encouraged her obsession with the paranormal to move forward with her writing. She feels like creativity sparks the flow of her blood stream, spilling her essence onto paper to share with others. When she isn't writing to purge her deep emotions you can find her spending time with her energetic young family (who embraces and encourages her level of crazy) or cuddled up devouring books. She would love to hear from readers and share their mutual love of the written word.
