Takeover Tuesday Spotlight: Melina Turner

Melina Turner has been writing since 2003 and lives in Swan Hill, Victoria, Australia. She first started writing poetry but over the years has gradually branched out with short stories and novels. With awards such as honoured writer, best poet of 2012, and best poem of 2012, she is now penning up a storm.

When Melina is not writing, she is studying for her veterinary nurse qualifications, reading books or comics and helping other authors publish through her publishing house, 'Hear Me Roar Publishing.'

Can you share a little of your current work with us?
My current piece i am working on is called Yonder Volume 1 and it is loosely based on the topic freedom. As many of us know, wars won decided our freedoms, the men who lost their lives gave us freedom. This piece is a Young Adult Scifi Fantasy. It is based on a young woman who gives her life to say a young boy from a car crash only to be stopped from moving on. She is given a second chance of life or death. But everything comes at a cost.
Who designs your covers?
I have many graphics designers. I like to try new graphic designers to see if we work well and just because I can. My favourite part of the publishing process is finding the perfect cover. I am also a forever client with EmCat Designs who have proven such skill and talent. I'd happily go through them for covers.
Do you have any advice for other writers?
Do not worry about the publishing process until your book is complete because it will affect your writing. Write that book and then worry about the publishing process. Another piece of advice would be that when working on promotions and marketing, make a drafted marketing plan...and then google search marketing ideas for indie authors. I know it sounds weird but out of all the sites on google that talked about marketing. So far ive found 200 ideas most authors have not used.
Do you have any writing rituals or certain things you do to aid your writing process?
Nope, I am one of those people that just sit and write. Ive never needed music or pictures or inspirations. Just random thoughts and bam! We are on a roll.
Favorite snack and thing to drink while you write?
I dont eat or drink whilst writing. It ruins the moment. Inspiration can go as quick as it reveals itself. So i wait until i have written all i can before snacking.
