Author: J.L. Beck
Release Date: April 7, 2015
Synopsis
A book where the romance is just as dangerous as the crime….
FBI Agent Devon Mitchell
is trying everything he can to move on with his life.
Except he can’t.
After losing the one
person he loved more than life itself, he struggles to carry on with the guilt
and burden of letting her go. When a new assignment in his old hometown lands
on his desk, he can’t help but feel drawn to it.
Drawn to her...
But this isn't a case he
was assigned, but a secret undercover mission that could ruin his career if his
cover is blown.
Tegan Anderson wishes
for a normal life. Pushing her way through college, she finds herself in dead
end relationship number three—except this time, the guy is into something far
more dangerous than your usual twenty-three-year-old is involved in.
Drugs, dirty money, and
casino debts are just a few things her ex has found himself wrapped up in.
When the people he owes
money come looking for him, she finds herself in a situation that could be the
difference between life and death.
With the odds stacked
against them, and a herd of angry men after them, can Devon and Tegan survive
the mayhem that is about to ensue? Can they overcome the past or will it
shatter both of them?

5 STARS
This is the third book in J.L. Beck’s Kingpin series. This one can be read as a standalone, but I
recommend that you read the first two books prior to reading this one. The main characters in this book aren’t the
same as the first two, but Zerro and Bree (main characters in Indebted and
Inevitable, are in this book as supporting characters). This book takes place a couple years after
Inevitable ends. This is a great read. It’s fast paced and has action, both violent
and sexual. You will be wondering what
is going to happen next while reading this book. There are twists, turns, and surprises.
Devon Mitchell is an FBI agent. We actually met him in Inevitable when he
helped Zerro and Bree. Zerro is now his
partner in the FBI. Who would have
thought that a month long, forced vacation would flip his world upside
down. He had a rough childhood, his
parents are drug dealers. The only good
thing was Tegan, his high school sweetheart. He loved her with everything he had, but he
left her to keep her safe. He didn’t
think he was good enough for her and she deserved more.
He ends up back in his hometown because he stumbled upon
some papers on his way out of the office to start his vacation. He figures Tegan is long gone and has what
she deserves.
Boy is he wrong!
Tegan has been pulled into something horrible because of her
ex boyfriend. She keeps being betrayed
by those she loves.
These two go back and forth about having a new relationship
or not. I was hoping it would work out,
but honestly, I didn’t know if it would or not.
“You stop time, baby, and you allow me to truly feel what it
feels like to be loved by someone like you.
And I want to do the same for you.
I don’t want to be the one who turned his back on you anymore. I want to be the man you always wanted
because you have always been the woman I have needed.”
When everything goes down with the bad guys, I was on the
edge of my seat hoping they both came out alive.
There is one thing that I am still curious about
though. What exactly Caroline’s role in
this was and why she would do that to her best friend?
This is a great read.
I loved the little flashbacks that Devon and Tegan had.
